I have been concerned with the apparent lack of communlcation regarding medical examinations at our laboratories. Howard Smith, Ernie Blades and Jerry Mantel! share this concern. Ernie has received medical reports from Dr. S. Klein of the Middlesex people and properly has not read them. Similarly, Howard Smith has received some of the Trexlertown and perhaps some examinations of Valley Forge personnel provided by Dr. Hyman. Complete reports from Dr. Hyman are not yet received. As you know Tom Medovich at the East Coast emulsion facility also has been or will be medically screened by Dr. Klein. Dr. Klein has Indicated that he cannot take on the responsibility of pre-employment medical examinations for the emulsion facility. At this writing it Is not known If pre-employment examinations by another physician would Include VCM testing and If at this point they are not, should these tests also be required. In conversation with Dr. Kotin I suggested that Corporate Safety be the collection point and ultimate repository for the records until we have a medical director. Upon collection Corporate Safety would forward all reports to Kr. Kuschner for his evaluation and Interpreta tion and further tests if so Indicated. The obvious suggestion was made that where desired the results would be conveyed to our employees by their personal physician but In any event there would be a report to each Individual whether there be satisfactory examinations or any abnormality. Howard Smith has suggested that a Corporate Medical Standard should be formalized defining specific examinations and periodicity of same. Spurlock/Valley Forge As you requested, I discussed with Dr. Kuschner yesterday, the 14th, your pro posed decision that we offer examinations to previous employees with 3 years or more in VtM related assignments. I had already asked Joe Odom and Tern Herbig to contact this category and offer them our standard PVC physical examination at the APCI consulting physician nearest their present residence. We did not offer transportation--physicians and locations are as follows; Dr. Fong Wei -- Princeton, New Jersey Dr. Herbert Hyman -- Allentown, Pennsylvania Dr. William Blalock -- Paducah, Kentucky Dr. Barkley Beidleman -- Pensacola, Florida Dr. Kuschner made same interesting comments in the way of advice. These conments were further discussed with respect to present employees after I read him Para. #1 of Joe Sebastianelli's letter of 27 November relative to my report of our proposed program for VQi medical surveillance, medical records, and personnel monitoring records. Joe's letter points out that we are "not required.. .to include employees who pre viously worked in our PVC operation in the Medical Surveillance Program.. .however APCI Management (could decide) to include such eaployees...." Dr. Kuschner felt we would be lucky to have SOI oome in for examination (501 of our retirees reported and we offered them transportation).
