SGP 0006395 Mst7- cQr * 7r<^-?/ He reported that the American Cardboard Association ran a series of sound tests using hardboard applied over gypsum backerboaro. The resulting sound ratings were higher than with an equivalent thick ness of gypsumboard and the AHA may conduct fire tests on seme of these assemblies. Since they include gypsumboard the Association will re quest permission to use them in further editions of the Fire Resistance manual. The committee recommended that sound data be developed on all generic assemblies listed in the manual. A task force has been appointed to develop a list of assemblies requiring sound data and an estimated cost of such testing. The committee members are concerned about plans by Underwriters' Laboratories for a supplemental edition of their BML book to include only fire tested assemblies. This publication could have an effect on the acceptance of our Fire Resistance manual, partic ularly by code bodies. The "lot line wall test" run at the National Gypsum Laboratory in September 1971 failed to pass the 2-hour fire endurance test by approx imately 3 minutes. The test was conducted with new dimension lumber and the National Bureau of Standards has suggested it could be considered a nominal 2-hour test. It is the consensus that two hours can be achieved with some alterations in construction. A proposal for such tests by HUD would seem in order but would best be delayed until the entire question of the new dimension lumber is resolved. U.L. is pursuing the subject at present and hopefully they may propose a reduced load factor and no retesting. The Technical Committee will have a representative available as both consultant and witness at an upcoming series of full scale burnout tests conducted by the California Fire Marshal to determine influence of materials and design on spread of fire in corridors and from corridors to rooms. The Board of Directors has approved contri bution of $1,000 for materials. Hr. Shull concluded by recommending racking tests for assem blies used in industrialized housing to determine the effect of over road hauling and earthquakes on gypsum products. Cost estimates are now being prepared and may exceed the allocated $5,000. A series of fire tests were scheduled for November 9 at the University of California involving the use of Fire Fighter board as an underlayment for asphalt shingle roofing in an effort to upgrade fire classifications of roofing materials through the use of Fire Fighter, and $2,000 was approved for these tests. The Technical Committee also requested direction from the Board of Directors as to'what action to take concerning the asbestos restrictions in construction and manufacturing processes relating to gypsum products. Mr. J. A. Robertson called the attention of the membership to Senate Bill 1859 proposing to constitute a National Institute of Building Sciences (commonly referred to as the NIBS bill).
