Your presence in the Washington area for the 2005 Annual Meeting provides an opportunity to convene a forum here to which non-SHS researchers and scientific staff of various U.S. Government agencies will be invited. The study sponsors have asked me to organize such a symposium. Facilities suitable for the Symposium are available in the Leavey Conference Center at Georgetown University on Friday, November 4, the day after the Annual Meeting in Fairfax, Virginia. The Symposium would begin in the morning with a continental breakfast for all participants and conclude in the early afternoon. The principal purpose of this first letter is to advise you of these plans and to request that you plan to extend your visit to the Washington area one day beyond the conclusion of the Annual Research Meeting in order to attend and, where appropriate, participate actively in the Symposium. The Symposium Program is now under development, and successive drafts of the agenda will be circulated to all of you for comment and suggestions. However, I will be inviting the senior Chinese and American SHS investigators to make the major presentations and asking that some members of the ERP and SRP participate by chairing sessions and making introductory remarks. I look forward to your participation in what I anticipate will be a lively and interesting meeting.
