Machinery Division Unveils Communication Protocol Kit
The SPI Machinery Division has announced that licensing agree ments are available for the SPI Communication Protocol Develop ment Kit, Phase I.
The two-part protocol represents a joint effort with the Machinery Component Manufacturers Divi sion to solve the problem of a lack of interfacing between different brands of auxiliary equipment.
Phase I allows for communication between a machine and its auxiliary equipment Phase n will allow for robotics communication between machines or between machine and host equipment.
The protocol provides informa tion for software development for
each auxiliary unit and an RS 485 serial communication port so that varied communication elements are allowed to "talk the same lan guage" with the processing ma chine as the centerpiece of the system.
It was created by the two divi sions primarily for SPI members; however, SPI is offering it to nonmembers at a higher price.
The price of the protocol for SPI members is $2,500; for non-mem bers, $5,000. All companies must sign a licensing agreement with SPI.
