W eiss Within the past, few weeks, a r.uirher of developments have occurred of considerable interest and importance. 1. "The New York Times" Sunday magazine section is planning to run a feature story or. asbestos-health in its February 4th issue. The author of the - article, Robert Sherrill, a well-known free-lance `writer, contacted the Association on Friday, -J a n uary 5th, a mere week before the deadline for"tlie . completion of the article. Because of his deadline, Sherrill declined numerous invitations from botSa the Association and Johns-Manville to meet person ally with-industry representatives and to tour a n asbestos plant. Considerable material was.sent, to Sherrill ana conversations totaling perhaps four- hours were held with him over the phone, neverthe less, because of the unfortunate late entrance o f . the industry into this matter, it is anticipated that the article will probably-contain many ele ments of a "scare" nature. The long delayed Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards 'on asbestos are now scheduled to bis" published in the Federal Register on or about February 15th. On the basis of recent conversations with officials, it appears lib.ely that the standards will not be unreasonable and. will. not place an undue burden on the asbestos industry. Arrangements are being made to obtain and distribute copies of the Federal Register containing the E P A standards in the same rapid manner as was accomplished with the OSKA standards last June. 3. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a P.alph Nader organization, is planning to publish a 50 page booklet on asbestos-health sometime within the next month. It can be reasonably assumed that the booklet will not be favorable to the industry. Efforts to - 2- - date to learn the precise contents of the bobklet have been unsuccessful. The booklet will probably be officially released at a press conference in Washington, with Ralph Nader attending to lend his . considerable publicity value to the project.- Arrange t ' " f. ments have been made to obtain"copies of the press release and booklet on the day of the conference so that the Association can rapidly prepare and distribute its ovrn press release on the booklet, if "it is deemed desirable to do so. .4. A bill has been introduced in the U. S. House of Representatives to repeal the Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966 and to transfer standard setting and enforcement authority for . S. mining -operations, including asbestos, from the Department of the Interior to OSKA. The implications of this proposal are quite serious.
