Decene is a relatively non-toxic hydrocarbon (alphaolefin) that can easily be used safely with the proper precautions. A SHELL material safety data sheet is enclosed for your reference. Irritation can result from eye or skin contact with the liquid. Rubber gloves and goggles are recommended to avoid this. Effects of exposure to a high concentration of decene vapors are dizziness and general anesthesia. This situation is a possibility in a confined space. Forced air ventilation should be utilized to prevent vapor accumulation, and standard vessel entry procedures should be used. If symptoms of overexposure do occur the victim should be removed to fresh air. These are general considerations for the safe use of decene.
