ZI P SD Summary.ZIP SH ELL-MCCLU RG-055634 Pearl Brief The Issue: Shell has committed $3MM to a $23MM five-year health study in Shanghai, with the goal of better defining the risks from exposure to benzene. This research follows a 1997 National Cancer Institute study of benzene-exposed workers in China, which concluded that benzene exposure might cause non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, (NHL). Given Shell's stake in Benzene production and marketing, Shell hopes to clarify health impacts and develop appropriate protocols for exposure limits and mitigation measures. They both have wording that implies 1) our existing protocols are inadequate, and 2) this study will improve our existing protocols. My counter to that is 1) we do not know if our protocols are adequate today or not. The purpose of the study is to give us more information to determine if there are more diseases (e.g. non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma) at a given exposure level and what that exposure level would be - it's not until after the study that we will know if our existing exposure levels are "adequate". and 2) nothing in this study will "help the Benzene business unit improve its protocols... ". This study will give us information, which we can use to determine what, if any, improvements are needed. I may be nit-picking, but sure don't want a document out there implying we know are protocols are already inadequate.
