Gottesman October 2, 1986 TO: ^Robert Sherman RE: SPI 50th Anniversary Video This is in response to your request at the meeting in New York on September 29th that we advise you of items that might represent ''milestones" in the past 50 years of SPI history, for use in the video which is to be produced. I suggest the following: 1. Involvement With Regulatory Agencies - I specifically have in mind work that was carried out by the former PVC Safety Group within SPI, and later by the Vinyl Institute with the Environmental Protection Agency on the emission standards for vinyl chloride monomer. This would be useful in showing how industry trade association was instrumental in working with a federal agency in establishing industry standards to control emissions of a known human carcinogen, vinyl chloride monomer. 2. Involvement With the Fire Community - Because of the real or alleged problems dealing with fire and combustion toxicity of plastic materials, the role of SPI with fire service organizations should be emphasized. Specifically, what I have in mind here is the educational program that the Vinyl Institute started with the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSt) to develop an educational program for use with firefighters relating to vinyl in the fire environment. This served as a starting point for several other training programs dealing with plastics generlcally, and a video tape program developed by the Polyurethane Division, also working with ISFSX. We have a full movie involving several fire sequences and some of the footage might be useful in the video. 3. Technical Proyame to Develop Information For Use With Legislative and/or Regulatory Bb4iss - Technical programs on various subjects have been carried out more* economically by having them coordinated vie an SPI division, than might by possible- if Individual companies were to do these. Specifically, I havo iir mind programs dealing with toxicity of fire combustion gases at SvRI, pipo permeation programs at Battelle, pipe leaching programs at McKesson Environmental Sciences, plastic recycling programs at the Plastic Research Institute, and the incineration program that the Vinyl Institute is participat ing in in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This guide describes the services SPI offers its members. You might want to review this to make certain you have included all of the significant ones in the documentary.
