Dear Bruce:
The attached report describes the vinyl
chloride (VCM) monomer content of UCAR latex 1000 shipments. Efforts continue to reduce the current average level of 63ppm by weight.
In the course of this work, new chromato graphic columns had to be found and calibrated because our original method suffered from a severe Interference from acetaldehyde. Analytical studies are continuing to define whether or not the observed VCMpeak has additional interferences. We have not yet been able
to measure these low levels by an independent analytical technique. As our studies progress, we will continue to inform you-of our results. If you need help in monitor ing your employees at a selected paint plant, we. would gladly collect duplicate samples to compare your analyzer with ours.
I
' The analytical results and analytical methods for VCM analysis in both latexes and air were transmitted and discussed with your Mr. Swafford on October 18 by telephone. If you need additional Information, please contact me.
Very truly yours,

SUMMARY.
UCAR Latex 1000 shipments contain an averag
of 63.5ppm by weight VCM 22.5 (standard
deviation) with a range from 25 to 113ppm. Analytical
work is in progress to show that interferences do not exist.
Process work continues to lower the VCM content.
DISCUSSION
Table I contains measurements on a selected
series of samples including production from
both our Tucker, Georgia and Somerset, New Jersey JENNAT
latex plants to the six Glidden-Durkee sites. No significant
differences in product shipped from our plants to Glidden
plants was observed. The analytical method used in this
study is attached.
