CLEVELAND, OHIO 44115 Bulletin #130-72 June 8, 1972 TO: DISTRICT MANAGERS SALES REPRESENTATIVES PSC OPERATING MANAGERS SUBJ: FDA BAN ON LEAD - MARCH 11. 1972 The following is our company's up-to-date position in the handling of the FDA Pro posed Ban on lead and other toxic heavy metals, subject to necessary changes: About two months ago, a "hold production" was placed on all lead contained interior household type paints. MoBt of the formulas have been revised by the Technical Department in providing lead free formula {. 06% lead on non-volatile material). In cases where this has been extremely difficult to meet, temporary changes were made to meet the less than .5% requirements. Many of the exterior household paints have been reformulated to meet the require ment of less than .06% lead and it is expected that by October 30, 1972, the materials will meet the no more than .5% requirements. We will also mark every container and carton with a filling code suffix for easier identification and better control in the field. Identification markings will be as follows: Materials filled with a suffix "X" will contain under .06% lead and other toxic heavy metals. "V", under .5% lead and other toxic heavy metals. "Z", over .5% lead or .05% toxic heavy metals.
