Remarks This bulletin cancels Technical Department Bulletin, No. 2291, dated January 4, 1955 A new bulletin is being issued to update the technical information on Noxide Metal Paint 90 Red Lead Primer. No formula change has been made. Red lead primer was the original rust inhibitive primer. Noxide Metal Paint 90 Red Lead Primer continues to be one of the most de pendable and foolproof of all metal primers. The pigment consists of 75# red lead and 25# inert. Pure red lead paint levels poorly, but addition of inert helps the leveling. Leveling is an impor tant consideration, since paint failures frequently start in the shallow valleys left by the brush. While Noxide Metal Paint 90 Red Lead Primer levels better than pure red lead paint, it ''stays put" on bolt heads, rivets and sharp edges, thus insuring protec tion of these areas. 0007-PTL-000766 N15467 NUMBER: 2685 Pratt & Lambert-Inc. Technical Department Bulletin -2- PILE: P-A-E-12 Noxide Metal Paint 90 Red Lead Primer contains a linseed oil vehicle, the wetting characteristics of which have been intensified by addition of a special wetting agent. The primer penetrates into every irregularity and crevice of a metal surface. While alkyd, phenolic and oth^r resinous vehicles dry faster than linseed oil, none has the excellent wetting qualities of the oil vehicle is Noxide Metal Paint-9CT Reel Lead Primer. Noxide Metal Paint Red Lead Primer is basically a structural steel primer, but it is an acceptable primer for other metals, such as galvanized steel (after proper pretreatment) and aluminum. The adherence of the primer depends upon proper surface prepara tion. Dirt grease, oil, rust, mill scale and corrosion must be removed before painting. Specifications for using Noxide Metal Paint 90 Red Lead Primer follow: NEW WORK - First. Coat: Noxide Red Lead Primer. Second Coat: Noxide Metal Paint, each gallon thinned with one pint mineral . spirits or turpentine (do NOT thin Aluminum or Natural Graphite). Third Coat: Noxide Metal Paint. OLD WORK - Spot prime bare spots. Apply one or, preferably, two coats Noxide Metal Paint. If two coats are applied, thin first coat as for new work. W. H. LUTZ f 0007-PTL-000767 Mltl>mtFna-UIA H26M
