The second p o in t has to do with the p o s s ib ility of probable p o lso n in # in connect ten with the handling of gasoline* As you w ill see from the studies made the danger of lead poisoning in con nection w ith the gasoline is negligible* On the other hand from time to time various persons have feared th a t they would be poisoned and consequently various KJT 0013471 in v estig atio n in order th a t a diagnosis may he made and in order th a t these fe a rs should be reduced and eventually eliminated* The th ird m atter which Ju stifie s your careful attention is in connectten with the cleaning o f tanks which have been used fen? the blending and storage of leaded gasoline* These tanks eventually develop deposits and sludge a t the bottom* and the sludge contains s ig n ific a n t q u a n titie s of decomposition products of te tra e th y l lead* I t is necessary th at the precautions which we have advised be followed to the l e t t e r by the men who e n te r such tanks f o r the purpose of cleaning them The danger here is not hypothetical or imaginary* but is real* I t is necessary* therefore* th at the o il companies see to i t th a t proper precautions are taken when these tanks are to be cleaned* I t la especially necessary th a t the men be protected against the Inhalation of dusts and vapors from the sludge and from the sides of th e tank* In our opinion th is protection can only be provided adequately by the use of a ir - lin e masks which provide a copious supply of fre sh a i r In i&e face piece a t allttim es* The recommendations fo r care and clean lin ess are also necessary but the chief precautionary measure Is associated with the use of proper masks* I tr u s t you w ill writ to me from time to time* lo ttin g me know of any : d if f ic u ltie s which you may have* or of any new developments which sees of importance* I t is d i f f i c u l t to maintain adequate contact with th is problem in a l l p arts of the world* and 1 can only re ly upon the care and decisions o f the medical consultants o f the Corporation in th is regard* ; " ' ;.
