Kehoe, M.D Sidney Lerner, M.D. June 14, 1978 Ettco Wire and Cable A number of samples of blood to be analyzed for lead are received without any accompanying history and other back ground data upon which to make reasonable interpretations. As such, the Clinical Studies Division met with represen tatives from the Analytical Section and decided to use a standard reporting for such specimens. This would simply identify the range of normal but would not make any attempt to define anything beyond that, such as, action levels and the like. There was no intention to eliminate the interaction of physicians at the Kettering Laboratory with other physicians in industry who share mutual responsibilities for the maintenance of health of workers. It was, however, our feeling that in the absence of more definitive information from the physician responsible for the care of the particular employees that reporting normal blood lead values would be an appropriate procedure. I do not see where this should cause any particular confusion and I do not see where it contradicts previous reports and test data. If blood lead levels are above normal and in ranges "of concern" or in "dangerous" levels and we have the appropriate supporting data, an individualized professional interpretation would be provided. I would be pleased to discuss this with you further and would have no hesitancy in your sending a copy of this memorandum to Mr. Rath.
