Ohio. 20th April 19*+9 Dear Boh, When I wrote you on April 7th I was under the im pression that you had indicated that you might he free to visit us during the present summer. From your letter of April iVth it would seem that you had not seriously con sidered such a trip during the present year, and to this extent I have been mis-informed. I know I do not have to tell you that any trip you can spare the time to undertake on our behalf serves a genuinely useful purpose, and would be welcomed by us all. After talking the matter over with Davison, however, I do not feel justified in asking you to undertake a trip to England this summer and, provided it fits in with your plans, it would, I think, be preferable to postpone your visit until the summer of 1950. Our plans for the extension of our manufacturing facilities are still in the formative stage, and I feel it might be wasting your time to ask you over here to consult with us on the problems which will undoubtedly arise in connection with this Project until our plans are further advanced. As things stand at present, we plan to have the new plants in operation by the 1st January 1952, but there have been so many delays that I think it improbable that the work will be completed on time. The summer or autumn of 1952 is a more realistic date. ' If my suggestion for a visit in the summer of 1950 meets with your approval, perhaps you will let me know some time within the next few months a tentative date so that we can make the necessary reservations well in advance. You probably cannot fix any definite date at this time, but if you will let me know what time of year would be most convenient for you, we can make tentative reservations on a ship such as the "Media" or the "Parthia". These are post war Cunard vessels of about 15,000 tons, carrying a comparatively small number of passengers and taking approximately 8 days over the trip. The "Mauretania" is an alternative, and from all accounts is very comfortable. There is also a new Cunarder, the "Coronia", which I understand is a very comfortable ship. I am still most uncertain about my plans for visiting the United States. Bill Carlisle and several others are due here from New York next week for a series of meetings, which may take close on a month. As things stand at present, I doubt very much whether I shall be able to get away from London before July at the earliest. I was most upset to get a cable from Earle Webb yesterday morning advising me of Arch Maxwell's death. I spent a week-end with Arch in Cleveland in March of last year and, while I thought he looked a great deal older, it never occurred to me that he would not live for many years to come. He certainly lived a very full life, and I doubt whether he regret ted any part of it. I am most sorry for his wife Bobs. I have just heard from Harry Kaley that Ethyl Corporation has decided to take advantage of our invitation to have a representative of their Company present during the meetings which Mr. Noble has planned to hold in London in the latter part of June. It has been decided to send Oscar Lewis, and this, naturally, gives me a great deal of pleasure, particularly since Nan and Jill have already planned to visit us in July.
