PERSONS INTERVIEWED: Dr. Fred Herzog - R&D Chemist Tom Walker - Senior Group Leader-Development
CALL OBJECTIVE: Discuss RG-244 and RG-600.
RESULTS OF CALL:RG-600 (Tom Walker) - No thermoplastics processed here. Strictly fabric coatings and foam where stiffness is not desirable. (EJK - Tom Walker has never heard of Sheldon Dickson, the Chrysler man in Trenton who suggested we contact him regarding RG-600.)
RG-244 (Fred Herzog) - Have been looking at RG-244 as a replacement for Cab-0-Si 1 for over a year. Big problem is toxicology and lack of initiative on their part. Work to date has shown RG-244 to be about twice as efficient as pyrogenic silica in their vinyl plastisol fabric coatings. However, they seem to want a wet-out product and Dick has sent them two samples of 5% RG-244 in Monsanto 711 plasticizer. As discussed recently with R. E. Byrne, these samples exhibited lower viscosity build than Cab-O-Sil and so there is no great advantage in them over the latter. Using dry RG-244 has not been completely ruled out but is strongly opposed as their present ventilation system is extremely primitive. Fred is to discuss an RG-244 trial with their health and safety director and, if approved, we will be requested to monitor their dust emissions. Dick Kelly will follow up on this. Also, requestei that Fred try premixing RG-244 with 711 plasticizer himself under low-shear levels to see if he can get better results. Agreed to do this but from all outward appearances, it is going to take a great deal of motivation on the part of Dick Kelly to get him to move.
FOLLOW-UP ACTION REQUIRED: This is mostly up to Dick Kelly. of Cab-O-S1 per year which would make a nice account for them. assists"S possible but little that we can do at this time.
Chrysler uses about 36M lbs. We should give them as much
