Dayton, OH 45408 Dear Ms. Spenoor, Betty Hayslip is a 62 year-old woman who worked for the GM Tr uck Bur, Group from September, 1981 until retirement In August, 1989. She alleges that exposures to some unidentified dust and thick black dirt for the last six years of her employment caused her to develop a lung disease. Ms. Haysllp'o job- involved installing trim on doors and Interiors of the Chevrolet and GKC compact trricks and utility vehicles which are manufactured at the facilty in Dayton. Her work was in assembly only. The parts used in the process are manufactured elsewhere and shipped to the plant for assembly. Her work was not of the type where dust would be generated and there was no other activity in the area which would generate dust. I spoke to Bill Martin, Worker's Comp. Rep. for the plant, and Tim Rittenhouse, of the Safety Group. Neither could shed any 1Ight as to the source or nature of the dust In question. Roth stated that the area and work were not considered to be conducive to the formation of dust and airborne dirt. There Is no record that she re|>orted the dust to her supervisor, or the plant nurse, whom she visited several Limes. The file contains notes from the nurse In the plant medical unit which covered several years. There are statements indicating that Ms. Hayslip had breathing problems and sinus headaches In 1980. There is no mention of dust or dirt from the plant. Che apparently lived very close to the train derailment which Involved burning phosphorous and told the nurne that she could smell, the fumes from that accident.
