J. / subject Field Quality Report No. 1 -- Period covered January 6 , o January 10, 1969 AREAS VISITED: CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY; Major Observations made are as follows: I. Quality of Major Products A. Wallboard 1. Based on competitive samples obtainedfrom the above areas, Kaiser's Regular and N.A.F. wallboard remain competitive in such categories as weight, edge hardness and taper depth. Scoring, breaking and nailing qualities were also good. ' 2. Cupped tapers observed on 3/8" wallboard produced in October and December; board produced in early January showed considerable improvement. p 3. Kaiser's 5/8" Vinyl wallboard showing signs of sleuter board warp, causing offset joints when used in conjunction with sound deadening board and ' steel studs. B. Plaster and Lath Basically a wallboard area; none of Kaiser's lath or plaster working during this period. C. Accessories . 1. The above areas being a dry powdered compound market, there is very little of Kaiser's material sold. There were 200 bags of 3-purpose J.C. sold; however, this material was still at the dealer's yard--no jobs working using said material. Problems encountered on 3-purpose J.C. both at the plant (rapid letdown) and in the field (lumping). Tests are underway at Delanco to resolve problems. 2. Kaiser's steel stud and track very acceptable, working satisfactory. No jobs observed using Kaiser's corner bead--very little sold in the area. Rust problem seems to be eliminated. Gypsum's 3/8" rocklath out of their Phila. plant still bundled on the edges (no zip tape), ends not sawed. Board exhibiting hot ends ranging from 1/2" up to 3" (end peel). Uidth control OK, lengths variable 47-11/16" to 47-7/8". 2. U. S. G.'s 3/8" S-W edge wallboard seen in increasing amounts, captures full load in many instances. 3. National's 3/8" wallboard quality has fallen off some; knobby breaks, soft edges and a slight end peel observed. 4. Celotex's 1/2" Type X wallboard weights ranging in the 1900's; core looks good. 5. U. S. G.'s Econo bead (non-perforated) predominately used, very well accepted; on all jobs no rusting noted. 6. Penn-Crete joint compound increasing in popularity, well accepted; finished results excellent. Quality joint compound experiencing problems (lumps, grit and draging properties); the word has spread and many old customers refuse to buy. .' 7. U. S. Gypsum's wallboard joint tape dominates this area. E. Action Required 1. Make necessary adjustments to eliminate cupped tapers on 3/8" W.B.; shims on mixer table, adjustments on mixer boots, heat on paper or tilting, scoring motors. 2. Vinyl wallboard received from Antioch and stocked at Delanco, Improved sleuter placement or go to wood pallets/eliminate warp. to 3. Based on tests conducted at Jacksonville and Delanco in.regard to rusty corner bead; Delanco plant to ship all bead produced from Japanese stock. 4. Continue tests on 3-purpose joint compound, resolve rapid letdown, and lump problem. Continue demos in the field. \ ATTACHMENT FIELD QUALITY REPORT NO. 1 G. A. BENEDICT JANUARY 13, 1969 (1) CHERRY HILL OFFICE CENTER (BUILDING "C"--2 STORY OFFICES), CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY. CONTRACTOR: PENN-WALL CONSTRUCTION Kaiser's aluminum door frames used throughout (single and double hang); working satisfactory, only problem being service. KWS 250 Stud and track also used throughout very well accepted--no problems. Using Kaiser's 1/2" sound board used on corridor and party walls, single ply, no problems. ^ Using Kaiser's 5/8" type X vinyl wallboard; mistlc blue, cameo white, champagne, bittersweet, bayleaf and yellow essence. Problems encountered on vinyl wallboard: 1. Sleuter board warp--board applied vertically; screw'fastened top and bottom and glued to sound board and studs; offset seen from one board to the other where warp occurred. 2. Some face depressions showing thru vinyl finish. 3. Cockled newsline paper. The last two problems were not stated by the job foreman and do not appear to be a major problem at this time; however, the sleuter board warp is a problem and was not only encountered on this jobsite, but also seen on a site in Camden, N. J., same contractor, (glue adhesive does not have enough drawup power as do screws). ' Kaiser's aluminum trim also used, no problems. Building "D" also investigated, same type construction but three stories. All Kaiser's material used. ' , (2) PICHWICK VILLAGE (SINGLE HOMES, PRICE $25,000 to $35,000) CHERRY HILL, N. J. CONTRACTOR: I & A DRYWALL U. S. Gypsum's 3/8" S-W wallboard coded 12198PH35 used throughout. Knobby breaks seen on across and parallel directions, both on narrow and large cuts. Some unsawed ends seen; hangers claim that board is too soft. Celling joists out of alignment and warp causing wavy ceilings. U. S. G.'s 1/2" T & G Firecode Sheathing used on exterior, working satisfactory. (3) BRANDYW00DS (SINGLE HOMES $28,000) CHERRY HILL, N. J. CONTRACTOR: BETTER DRYWALL--BOB RICKABOUGH National's 3/8" wallboard used, codes illegible; board applied horizontally and fastened with a 1-3/8 phosphate-coated nail, double nailed. Wallboard showing signs of knobby breaks in across direction breaks; also soft edges and a slight end peel. National's quality on this product seems to have fallen off some. Another home investigated on same development: Celotex's 1/2" wallboard coded M108E3 used. Knobby scoring in both directions and soft edges observed. A T ATTACHMENT FIELD QUALITY REPORT NO. 1 G. A. BENEDICT JANUARY 13, 1969 (4) PICKWICK APTS (2 STORY) CHERRY HILL, N.J. CONTRACTOR: I & A DRYWALL Wood framed, front and back, with clnderblock used on fire walls. Kaiser's 1/2" wallboard coded 12D29G668 used throughout. Wallboard's scoring, breaking and nailing qualities were excellent as acclaimed by hangers. Noted; edges could be slightly harder and several hot ends were evident. No face ply separation noted. Kaiser's 1/2" Moisture guard used in all bathrooms, working satisfactory. (5) MAPLEWOOD APTS. & TOWNHOUSES, MAPLE SHADE, N. J. CONTRACTOR: JOE WOLF U. S. G.'s 1/2" regular coded 12308PH34 and Flintkote's 1/2" regular coded 3198C38 used throughout. U. S. G.'s board breaking, knobby on narrow cuts. Flintkote's board showing signs of brittle core; nails breaking face paper. Core structure and edge hardness on both types board were satisfactory. U. S. G.'s 1-1/8" Econo bead used, no signs of rusting. (6) INSURANCE CO. OF NORTH AMERICA, MOORESTOWN, N. J. (ONE-STORY BUILDING) CONTRACTOR, C. ERICKSON & SONS Kaiser's 2-1/2" steel stud used throughout. Kaiser's 1/2" wallboard coded 12D26P268 used in small quantities. The majority of board used is Kaiser's 1/2" x 4' vinyl coated (french white) wallboard. Entire job Kaiser's 340 system except for one aluminum extrusion; this being Goldbond's 1607 ceiling trim channel with trim slips, which is commonly used in their contempo wall system. System working quite well, liked by contractor and crews. (7) VILLAGE OF PINE RUN (SINGLE HOMES $23,000) BLACKWOOD, N. J. CONTRACTOR: JOE WOLF Kaiser's 1/2" wallboard coded 9M26J2 (JAX'S board), double nailed, dimpling good, edge hardness satisfactory, slight knobby breaks in across direction (feels damp) other than this wallboard working good. Quality joint compound--third coat work (hand trowell); on flats, some pocking. Over metal (heavy fills) pocking and tearing noted, looks like quality has lost some of its working properties! U. S. Celotex's 1/2" type X sf wallboard coded L248E3 used on first and second floor ceilings, single ply; third floor ceiling, truss 24" o.c., dual ply of 1/2 type X. Celotex's 1/2" regular wallboard coded A329E3 used on all interior walls, single ply, four nails per member, nail 1-3/8" smooth shank with 5/16" head. Nails over dimpled, breaking face paper. Elastocel slabs used on all floors. Narrow cuts on 1/2" regular wallboard knobby. U.S.G.*8 tape and Penn-Crete's joint compound used, only taping during visit, working satisfactory. Tapers claim quality J. C. previously used (within a month) lumpy and poor working--stopped using. Also claims Penn- , Crete J. C. during summer month has fast open time and poor bond! (9) LATHAM PARK (TWO-STORY APTS.) WILLIAMSTOWN, N. J. CONTRACTOR: BILL HUNT J. M.'s 1/2" wallboard no codes available; Georgia Pacific's 1/2" wallboard coded 11218WF, board fastened using six nails per member on side walls and 7 nails on ceilings. U. S. G.'s 1-1/8" Econo bead nonperforated used throughout. Penn-Crete J. C. used to embed U. S. G.'s tape, only taping during visit using an 11" trowell for entire operation. Several knobby cuts noted on both types wallboard, both directions. Nails breaking face paper, nails not over dimpled. Finished apartments inspected where PennCrete J. C. was used; final appearance was satisfactory. In speaking with Bob Sims, taper, he claims up to a month ago he used quality J. C., and discontinued use of same due to poor workability and lumps. (10) THE WOODS (SINGLE HOMES $25,000) BERLIN, N.J. CONTRACTOR: ADAM GARTENHAYER Kaiser's 3/8" wallboard coded 12D5P368 and U. S. Gypsum's 3/8" wallboard coded 12208PH18 used in main body of hosue. Celotex's 1/2" wallboard coded A929E3 used in garage. One side of U. S. G.'s edge, harder than other side; Celotex's 1/2" wallboard edges soft; Kaiser's wallboard slightly harder than either. 'Taper depth on Kaiser's 3/8" wallboard slightly deeper than U. S. G.'s;r:both 3/8" wallboards scoring, breaking and nailing satisfactory. Slight cup taper noted on Kaiser's wallboard. (11) ALLISON APARTMENTS (TWO STORIES) MARLTON, N. J. CONTRACTOR: JIM BATCHELLOR . G. P.'s 3/8" wallboard coded 12058WF used throughout. Cinderblock firewalls separating each unit, wood furred 16" o.c. Wallboard double nailed. Slabs--Elastocel. Knobby breaks on across direction breaks and nails breaking face paper^ brittle core. Quality J. C. used (3 coats, hand applied), finished appearance: pocking and grainy on heavy fills, flats were fair. U. S. CONTRACTOR: JOHN CASTORINO Kaiser's 3/8" wallboard coded 1D6P269 used in main body of home; U. S. G.'s 1/2" firecode used in garage coded 12198PH18. J. M. 's glass fiber used in exterior cavities. Kaiser's wallboard working okay, edges hard. NOTE: Samples of wallboard and joint compound (Quality, Penn-Crete, U. S. G. Topping and Quaker) obtained for competitive tests at Delanco Plant. Weather during above visits; two to three inches of snow on the ground, clear and cold, 20y30 degrees. (14) RESIDENTIAL HOME ($30,000) DAVIS AVE., ABSEC0N, N. J. CONTRACTOR: ED WILLIAMS & SON. Kaiser's 1/2" round edge regular wallboard coded 12D18B368, Kaiser's 3/8" backerboard no codes available. Ceilings; electric heat, 3/8" backerboard nailed to joist; Kaiser's 1/4" wallboard used in 2" strips (nailed) 16" o.c.; electric wire placed between strips. Kaiser's hand hardwall plaster layed in over wire (1/4" thick sand aggregated)). Kaiser's 1/2" R.E.W.B. double nailed over system. All side walls Kaiser's 1/2" R.E.W.B. Contractor stated he has done several homes in this manner with no problems, likes system. Will use durabond 90 to prefill and Kaiser's 3-purpose J. C. 1/2" R.E. wallboard working exceptionally well, no problems. (15) THE OAKS (RANCHERS $18,000) SOMER's POINT, N. J. CONTRACTOR: TONY MA2ZI0 Celotex's 1/2" regular wallboard coded A828E3 double nailed, soft edges, many ends not sawed. Scoring and breaking satisfactory, not taping during visit. (16) ATLANTIS APTS. (ONE AND TWO BEDROOMS--THREE STORIES) SOMER'S POINT, N. J. CONTRACTOR: DOMINICK BAURIFFI U. S. G.'s 3/8" Rocklath coded 12138PH18 used at present, will go Kaiser's. Board hung using conventional lathing nail, four per member on ceiling and three on side walls. Many bundles showing several hot ends. Lengths ranged from 47-11/16" to 47-7/8" and sawed. Board exhibiting knobby breaks in across direction. Dry core splitter also noted. (18) SINGLE HOME ($18,000 SPLIT) BARNEGAT LAGOON, N. J. CONTRACTOR: U. S. DRYWALL Kaiser's 3/8" wallboard coded 1D6P369 double nailed, working satisfactory. Taper formation was good, no cupping noted. U. S. G.'s 3/8" S. E. Ultrawall panels (light oak) also used, using predecorated nails to fasten wallboard to studs. No slip sheet noted between panel sheets. (19) RESIDENTIAL HOME($35,000 CAPE COD) BRIGANTINE, N. J. CONTRACTOR: UNKNOWN U. S. Gypsum's 3/8" regular wallboard coded 12208PH and Celotex's 3/8" regular wallboard coded M318E1, the latter having many out edges and several hot ends. U. S.
