( 2 ) INTRODUCTION: The test s u b s t a n c e is a l i g h t yellow l i q u i d , s o l u b l e i n water a t a m b i e n t room t e m p e r a t u r e . T e s t s perforined o n t h i s m a t e r i a l , evaluated its potential aquatic toxicit:y and the data generated form t h e b a s i s of t h i s report. ACCLIMATION AND EXPERIMENTAL - DESIGN: T h e t e s t protocol u t i l i z e d f o r t h i s s t u d y was modeled a f t e r t h a t described by ASTMrE729-80. (1) The f a t h e a d minnows ( P i m e p h a l e s promelas) were o b t a i n e d from a p r i v a t e h a t c h e r y ( a ) . Stock f i s h were Geld in a f l o w t h r o u g h system fiberglass holding tank :Eilled with carbon-filtered w e l l water a t 14-16 d e g r e e s C. A d a i l y photoperiod of 1 6 h o u r s l i g h t and 8 h o u r s d a r k , w i t h a 30-minute t r a n s i t i o n period was m a i n t a i n e d t h r o u g h o u t t h e a c c l i m a t i o n and t e s t i n g period. The f i s h were f e d T e t r a - M i n ( b ) d a i l y , food b e i n g w i t h h e l d 48 h o u r s p r i o r t o a n d t h r o u g h o u t t h e t e s t period. F i s h were acclimated t o t e s t t e m p e r a t u r e f o r 2 d a y s p r i o r t o usle i n a s s a y s . Twenty ( 2 0 ) f a t h e a d minnows, u n i f o r m i n s i z e , were tested a t each chemical. A l l - g l a s s a q u a r i a , 3 ' 5 x 2 0 ~ 2 5cm c o n t a i n i n g 1 6 l i t e r s of d i l u e n t p l u s t o x i c a n t comprised a s t u d y chamber. T e s t f i s h were randomly allocated t o each t e s t chamber w i t h i n 30 m i n u t e s f o l l o w i n g t o x i c a n t a d d i t i o n . The f a t h e a d minnow e x p e r i m e n t s were c o n d u c t e d a t 19+2 degrees C. M o r t a l i t y , t e m p e r a t u r e , d i s s o l v e d o x y g e n l e v e l , and pH of a l l t e s t s o l u t i o n s were measured a t 24-hour i n t e r v a l s or u n t i l t o t a l m o r t a l i t y had o c c u r r e d . General observations were r e c o r d e d r e l a t i v e t o swimming p a t t e r n and b e h a v i o r a l c h a n g e s induced by e x p o s u r e t o t h e t e s t chemical. BACK TO MAIN The 96-hour f i s h s t u d i e s were p e r f o r m e d i n r e p l i c a t e u s i n g t h e f o l l o w i n g CS-2151 l o g a r i t h m i c concentrations: 87, 135, 210 3 2 0 , . and 490 mg/l. The range o f d i l u t i o n s was s e l e c t e d t o b r a c k e t 9 6 - h r . LC50 v a l u e s p r e d i c t e d from p r e l i m i n a r y e x p l o r a t o r y toxicity tests. LC50 v a l u e s w i t h 95% c o n f i d e n c e l i m i t s were c a l c u l a t e d u s i n g t h e p r o b i t program and 3 M TRAC Computer s y s t e m . M o n i t o r i n g e q u i p m e n t u s e d i n c l u d e d ASTM t h e r m o m e t e r s , O r i o n temperature-compensating p H meter, a Y e l l o w S p r i n g s d i s s o l v e d oxygen meter, and a T a y l o r temperature chart r e c o r d e r . RESULTS : The f a t h e a d minnows ( P i m e hales promelas) used i n t h e s e s t u d i e s --fE---- had an a v e r a g e w e i g h t o 0.3 grains a n d a l e n g t h of 3.5 cm. The l o a d i n g f a c t o r was-0.4 g/l; t h e maximum r e c o h e n d e d l o a d i n g . f a c t o r is 0.8 g / 1 -( 1) T e m p e r a t u r e , pH, and d i s s o l v e d oxygen v a l u e s a n d r a n g e s o b t a i n e d d u r i n g t h i s s t u d y were: 19+ 20 C . , - 7 . 6 8.0 p H u n i t s , a n d 96-hour d i s s o l v e d o x y g e n value: r a n g e d - from 5.2 5.9 mg/l. T h e s e l a t t e r v a l u e s c a l c u l a t e d o u t t o a minimal oxygen saturation of 56-63%. I n this r e p l i c a t e d s t u d y , t h e f i s h 96-hour LC50 v a l u e s were 1 9 9 and 1 5 3 mg/l.
