\ Li ficnteH i i' January 19, 1981 Mr. D. Meyer Dupont Co. Louviers BW39 Wilmington, DE 19898 Dear Mr. Meyer: Thank you for your interest in Gentex PreoxTM fabric. We've enclosed our product introduction brochure, which we hope will answer some of the technical questions you might have. Preox fabric was introduced as an asbestos equal for safety garments at the National Safety Congress in October, 1979, and since then it has been evalu ated for a variety of asbestos replacement applications - welder's clothing, welding blankets, gloves, and insulating materials. We believe we've only begun to scratch the surface of potential applications for Preox use. Gentex offers Preox as an aluminized fabric and as a rubber-coated fabric in various weights engineered to your specific application. These fabrics are sold directly to garment manufacturers, and we've included a list of our O.E.M. customers for you to contact and specify your request for Gentex Preox. With this new product introduction, Gentex also wishes to introduce itself not only as the largest aluminizer of fabrics for protective clothing garments in the world, but also as a full service Textile Engineering firm ready to assist you in all of your textile material requirements. Because of our size, we can offer specialized, personalized textile service to you for all of your textile needs. Again, thank you for contacting us. If Gentex can assist you further, please let me know. Very truly yours, CENTEX CORPORATION ! nii V. Gentex Corporation does not, with this document, warrant the performance characteristics of PreoxTM fabric, and no warranty of any type is intended or implied. It is expected that fabricators exercise necessary care in fabric selection, garment design, and manufacture, such that the intended exposure takes due account of the performance requirements. DUP 1012022 iSTh DU 053316 What is Preox Fabric? Preox fabric is an asbestos replacement for protective clothing that gives protection equal to or better than asbestos. Technically, Preox fabric is made of stabilized polyacrylonitrile fiber. Though changed from an acrylic into an equal to asbestos, Preox is still every bit a fabric. It has the kind of properties you find in an acrylic: light weight, strength, durability, stretch, and moisture retention. Preox fabric feels like worsted wool, sews like rayon, and cools like cotton. And when you use Preox fabric, you have an action garment that's light weight, gives superior mobility, and is extremely durable. Where heat reflectivity is crucial, we add our exclusive Dual-MirrorTM five-ply "aluminum-mylaraluminum-neoprene-fabric" construction.. How can something that feels so comfortable, protect so well? Though Preox fabric matches asbestos, it is neither rock nor refractory material. It has all their advantages, none of their disadvantages. As a fabric. Preox provides comfort, flex, and drape, yet gives you something else you need in the presence of high heat: a water vapor barrier, strength retention under load, and a protective transition to carbon. PreoxRibric DUP 1012023 DU 053317 ____ JE&jgi Hotter the temperature, better the performance. \ As temperatures increase, asbestos and its widely known "replacements" lose strength. Compared to asbestos fabric under the same temperature conditions. Preox fabric keeps its strength. Or gets stronger. Even under load. For example: At a measured 2875F, under steel mill computer control, molten steel was puddled onto a swatch of aluminized Preox fabric. Nothing underneath for support. Weight of the fabric: eight ounces. Weight of the steel: three pounds. For three minutes and thirty seconds the Preox fabric supported the molten steel. Though you may never see this happen in real life, judge for yourself how strong Preox fabric must be to take such punishment. When Preox fabric is exposed to impulse thermal energy, like molten metal splash, a chemical change in the fabric is triggered, and the fibers in Preox fabric become extremely strong, highly protective carbon fibers. The higher the temperature, the faster the change. The carbon fibers in Preox fabric remain strong in the presence of ultra-high temperatures -- even up to 5400T in some exposures of limited duration. And basic chemistry tells you carbon won't bum or melt in the everyday air we breathe. So Preox fabric can't bum. Or melt. Plus, there's another protective aspect of Preox fabric of key importance: moisture regain. The water vapor in Preox fabric provides a self-renewing thermal barrier. As Preox fabric heats, the water inside cools the fabric by acting as a heat sink. When Preox fabric cools down, water vapor is regained for the next work cycle. ilL--'SElSCSH Preox Fabric DUP 1012024 DU 053318 More for less. Now compare two identical protective garments -- except one is made of Preox fabric, the other of asbestos. Look at their work efficiency and on-the-job protection. Work Efficiency: Preox fabric is 100% stronger than underwriter's grade (1000-1) asbestos cloth. 100% stronger at a third less weight. Using Preox fabric means that a worker could carry almost five pounds less weight if his jacket/hood combination was made of Preox fabric rather than asbestos. Thus, the immediate benefits of using Preox fabric are employees have more freedom of movement, are more comfortable, and less clumsy. Garments made cf Preox fabric also keep employees cooler and on the job longer. Without employee fatigue, production and plant safety can improve. Protection on the job: Asbestos offers only half the radiant heat protection of Preox fabric. When aluminized asbestos fabric and aluminized Preox fabric are compared using a 3000F radiant heat source and test procedures specified by MIL-C-29143 (SA), it was found the non-aluminized surface of the asbestos fabric reached skin bum temperature (140F) much faster than Preox fabric. Molten metal splash protection? Preox fabric is unmatched. Preox fabric mounted alone on a wooden frame held a three pound puddle of molten steel at 2875F for three and a half minutes. Plus Preox fabric also did better than asbestos in the steel industry-accepted molten metal splash test. Preox Fabric DUP 1012025 fem til DU 053319 \ Passed with flying colors. The superior protective properties of Preox fabric have been proved two ways: First, at the steel mills, v/ith their extreme temperature conditions. Molten steel was poured on Preox fabric mounted, without any support, on wooden test frames. , Frames were made at 70, 45, and 30 angles to simulate various j body angles such as a worker bending an elbow, raising a knee, or j bending his back. We even had a flat frame that was 6 inches off the ground to simulate the worst possible accident. Three pounds of molten steel, at a measured 2875F, was poured on the Preox fabric samples. The molten steel simply ran down the fabric, off the frame, and when examined, the Preox fabric had retained its integrity, no bums, no holes. And the three pounds of molten steel puddled on the flat frame was held for three and a half minutes. The second molten metal splash test was performed at an independent laboratory. Under controlled conditions, two pounds of molten steel at 2850F 25F, was placed in a ladle suspended over a metal frame angled at 70 degrees. On the frame had been placed a wooden beard with a thick copper calorimeter located at the exact point of molten metal contact. The thermocouples inside the calorimeter were monitored by computer. A layer of standard 12 ounce durably treated cotton fabric was clipped to the frame, and on top. aluminized side up, the Preox fabric. The electronically controlled ladle was pivoted and in one-half second the two pounds of white hot steel dropped 18 inches onto the Preox fabric. In comparison with asbestos and other fabrics. Preox fabric was the only one that didn't bum or scorch the cotton backing material. At j Preox Fabric i i 1 DUP 1012026 DU 053320 lzgzwi dna 5: if. i VS VO/ j i.-ir. -37' All the facts together.
