Georgia-Ffecific intracompany memo Mr. W. A. Nalbone from J. R. Hurd subject Asbestos Caution Labels PLAINTIFFS EXHIBIT location location date Akron, N. Y. Portland June 7, 1974 /'RN P This memo is in response to your letter dated June 3, 1974 concerning the above subject. X appreciate your concern over the changes in the asbestos caution labels; however, our attorneys are also deeply concerned over recent findings of asbestosis in workers in the construction industry which is a result of working with joint system products. The new wording for the caution labels is in compliance with OSHA regulations. The fact that the wording, "Respirator Protection Required When Sanding" was added will only give us additional protection if any liability threats are made against our products. Our sales effort should not be affected, as the implication of the OSHA wording is to wear a respirator while working with these products anyway. You asked if we as Georgia-Pacific representatives are in a position to recommend the type of approved respirators to be used to our customers. X feel we should be prepared to answer end discuss any questions dealing with our products. If ve can give assistance to our customers as to what types of respirators are approved by OSHA, X see nothing wrong in doing so. I am enclosing a copy of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards which deals with the subject for your reference if you do not slready have a copy. If X can be of further assistance in clarifying this matter for you, please contact me. JRHsjb Enclosure \ce: Messrs J. D. Rauch - Akron, N. Y. E. B. Hollingsworth - Wilmington 0. E. Burch C. W. Lee Mason The Mason Company Post Office Box 765 Summit, New Jersey 07901 Dner Lee: Enclosed are three Velox prints of a warning label ve must show on our ready-mix joint compound palls to be In compliance with OSEA codes. We want these warnings to be Incorporated Into our pail printing die as soon as possible for use on all palls produced for Chicago, Akron and Marietta. On any pails ordered from you for Acme, ve would not want this warning to be shown, as their product does not bontain asbestos. These labels are to be located under and in line with Item 5 of the "Recommendations for Use" on both sides of the pall. We want the border to remain, but it should be brought in on both sides closer to the printing (as per my model) in order to line up properly. If there will be a charge for making this die change, please advise so ve can send you our purchase order. Thank you very much. Very truly yours. ELAtnh Enclosures ccx Hr. D. C.
