an exten sion to the AEP publication "Program for Control of Asbestos Dust" issued February, 1973 we would like to summarise current operating and new construction status relative to asbestos containing thermal insulations.
1. Starting with Gavin Unit 1 and all following units, "asbestos-free" insulation materials will be spcifie
for new construction.
. 2 . Amos Unit 3 - only the calcium silicate block and pip
covering has asbestos hazard potential (used principal
on horizontal pipe and potential traffic damage areas
.
of equipment). All mineral fiber (mineral wool and g.'
'pipe coverings, blocks, blankets and felts as well as
'insulating cements and finishes are "asbestos-free".
3. Cook Unit 1 and common - all calcium silicate pipe an<
block used has asbestos hazard potential, most of Uni*
-will use "asbestos-free" calcium silicate.

All operating units constructed prior to Amos Unit 3 utilized insulations falling into one or several of tl following asbestos containing categories, and require proper dust control measures when repaired, removed o: replaced:

As of early 1973 most insulation manufacturers are producing "asbestos-free11, insulations in most of the above general types without price markup. We strongly recommend that all maintenance and operating plant revisions of thermal insula tions specify that only "aspestos-free11 products be used.
Your cooperation in passing along the above informt! to all involved operating personnel is requested and appreciate
