Pease The Third Quarter Competitive Safety and Housekeeping Inspection for the Labs was conducted on August 14, 1984. The Quality Assurance Lab will be given the award for best rating this quarter. All the ratings are listed below: Quality Assurance Lab - Outstanding Research I - Good Research II Satisfactory General Comments Most ladder and hose inspections are due in September and should be re-inspected before the Annual Inspection. There was confusion and inconsistency concerning fume hood alarms, especially in Research I & II. Many did not function properly, and there did not seem to be a standardized alarm inspection program. Inspections on almost all of the fire extinguishers and safety and eyebath showers were up to date and visible. There was a question about large gas cylinders stored in the lab that requires Safety Department approval. Should there be a tag or permit visible that shows Safety approval? SC 000540 Third Quarter Safety and Housekeeping Inspection Page 2 Quality Assurance Lab South Lab One safety shower not tested since 5/84. Two hood sashes too high. Locker room not taped off as a smoking area. Five gallon sales samples not clearly labeled. Is it necessary for them to be in the lab? Unlabeled volumetric flask in the refrigerator. High pressure hoses on gas cylinders with no inspection tags. North Lab All hood velocity checks in good shape. Storage cabinets were extremely neat and orderly. Overall housekeeping was outstanding. Some samples were labeled with numbers instead of material contents. One gas cylinder in GC room was out of date (1976). Unused gas cylinder outside of GC lab was not labeled. Research I Lab 1102 hood alarm not working properly. Lab 1106 lab breaker in office. Lab 1109 NH3 cylinder outside is chained, but could a better arrangement be worked out? Lab 1204 fume hood turned off - magazines stacked on desk in office. Lab 1205 acetone stored in nalgene containers (not metal), umbrella on hood sash, and hood alarm on silence. Lab 1207 fume hood sashes too high. Lab 1209 hood alarm not working properly. Third floor refrigerator contained unlabeled bottles. Lab 1310 unlabeled containers of blue solutions. Safety shower and eyebath inspection good and visible. Research II General housekeeping and orderliness in most of these labs was not good. Industrial Hygiene Lab had unlabeled flask in refrigerator, no hood alarm, and coffee pot on bench area that is normally part of the working lab area. Lab 2104 fume hoods do not have alarms. Lab 2105 unlabeled bottles and much general clutter. Lab 2107 unlabeled waste container in sink. Lab 2108 fume hood not working. Lab 2110 fume hood sash too high and alarm not working. Waste can unlabeled. Lab 2113 office and lab tables cluttered. Lab 2129 office area not taped off for food and drink. Gas cylinder on bench not chained or stabilized. Lab 2143 general clutter.
