Tha t s lo body appears to th in down-dip from th e m ine. The t a lc from hole 1 i s s lig h t ly darker than current production due to more abundant opaques and greenish gangue components. However* the t a lc is su p erior to the o f f co lo r "u n sa tisfa cto ry " ore p revio u sly obtained from th e corresponding part o f tha m ine. The ore pinches in hole 3 in a position roughly down-dip from a sim ilar pinching in the mine. Whether th is thinning represents a continuation o f that con striction o f the ore seen in the mine or a pinching-out down-dip, would have to be determined by further exploration. The ore from the center part of the ta lc section is of good grade; however, due to the poor recovery a composite sample shows a disproportionately high
mica and amphibole contamination.
Hole 4 was selected during my recent v i s i t . The resu lts of the
d r illin g were reported to me by Mr* V. B ackels, ad follow s: t a lc from 147 to 193 f a s t , and from 203 to 265 fe e t, none to bottom at 273 f e e t . This is a t o t a l of 108 fee t of ta lc * Eastern Magnesia w ill send to me specimens from the upper and lower ta lc zones for petrographic examination. The two zones were reported to have minor tex tu ral d iffe re n ce s. The ore i s reported to be high-grade white t a l c . Whether or not the platy char
acter of the ore has been maintained in the thickened body is yet to be
determined.
Generally speaking, the mineral purity and whiteness would be expected to be maintained or improved along the apparent strik e o f the ore toward the thicker se c tio n , and possibly to decrease down-dip from the mine* The character of the ore at the present heading and in hole 4 is o f greater sign ifican ce to the mineral nature of the depoeit as a whole
than is the character o f the ore in holes 1, 2 , and 3 . A c r it ic a l fact is whether or not the platy character of the t a lc is maintained throughout
the greatly thickened section o f the ore body.
S p e cific d ifferen ces between the ore in the f i r s t three holes are not s ig n ific a n t since proper sampling of the cores w ill not be possible u n til they are s p l i t , crushed, and composites are made for experimental
work. Grain counts of the ty p ica l ore in cores 1, 2 , and 3 showed the following range of compositioni
Platy ta lc Nonplaty t a l c Carbonates
Altered amphiboles Opaques (including pyrite) Chloritizsd silicates
Micas Quartz, feldspar R u tile , flu o r ite , zirco n, magnetite

A sample o f selecte d t a lc ore was high-graded from the p ile near the ro ad sid e. T his sample represents current ore w ithout w all rock d ilu tio n and should correspond t o s e le c tiv e ly mined o re . The previous sample which was sen t to Denver contained abundant ganglia, more c lo s e ly represent in g r u n -o f- mine o re . The new sample was taken fo r comparative purposes, fo r p o ssib le work by Denver Equipment and Mr. P erk in s. I have recommended t o Mr. W. Magnus th a t Mr. Perkins repeat h is i n i t i a l b e n e flo ta tio n procedure ( in which he obtained a product w ith a b rightn ess o f 84) on th is newly obtained se le cte d a r e . The new sample o f ore w ill a lso g iv e Denver a chance t o show what they can do w ith s e le c tiv e ly mined o re .
The cry sta llo g ra p h ic h a b it o f th e t a lc in h o ls 4 and subsequent holes has y e t t o be determ ined. I f the ore is uniform , the m atter o f re serves is no longer a problem. Inasmuch as the mine was flooded during my la s t v i s i t to H anm cndsville, i t was im possible t o sample the ore fo r r u tile or to sample the current heading and s h a ft , as had been proposed. I t is ad visable th a t I taka care o f these d e ta ils vdien I go to Vermont to study th e subsequent co re s, the composite sam ple, and the flo ta tio n p rod ucts. A primary rem aining problem is improving the co lo r o f the flo ta tio n product.
