USAGE - TRANSPORTATION - STORAGE: For grinding, cleaning and polishing purposes. 196 units of the various types of abrasives are used per month. These are stored at the store room and transported by truck or hand.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: Abrasive materials are usually bonded together if in wheel or disc form or bonded on paper or cloth. Alundum, Aloxite and Emery are non-siliceous.
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Hazardous in grinding operations due to the dust generated. Inhala tion could be lnjurous to operators. Brass, copper, or lead when finally divided may lead to metal poisoning. Abrasives may be inert in the tissues of the lung, thus lowering the resistance to inflammatory diseases.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Exhaust ventilation at grinding level. Compulsory wearing of safety glasses. Respirator in poorly ventilated areas where grinding cannot be performed in controlled environment.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: Colorless liquid with a fragrant mint-like odor. B.P. 65 C. Relative density of vapor to air, 2.0. Soluble in water, alcohol, ether, chloroform and most volatile oils.
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Although not a serious industrial hazard, prolonged inhalation of its vapor may cause Irritation of mucous membranes and narcocis. Also repeated contact with skin may cause irritation.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Provide adequate ventilation and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Use gloves and safety goggles when handling.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: Colorless gas, garlic-like odor.-. Relative density to air 0.9. Bolling point - 127 F. minimum explosive limit in air is 2.5% by volume. Usually compressed in cylinders as a solution in acetone.
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: When mixed with air, it has 2.5 to 80% explosive range. Toxic Limits: 9000 ppm 1/2 to 1 hour bearable; 250,000 ppm 1/2 to 1 hour exposure dangerous; 450,000 ppm 5 to 10 minutes exposure is fatal. Defective equipment liberates acetone vapor as well as acetylene. Carbon monoxide is formed by oxidation.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Careful handling of cylinders necessary to prevent damage. Periodic checks of valves and hoses necessary to prevent leaks. Also proper ventilation is needed to remove reaction products.

Dust readily in handling. Has up to 57. free HF acid as impurity. Dust and fume can cause serious burns and is irritating to eyes, nose and all skin membranes. Poisonous when ingested.

EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Reacts in wet atmosphere to liberate ammonia fumes - sometimes in excessive amounts which could be extremely dangerous.

Atomite in use in the Ingot Plant for tool and trough protection and therefore there is no possibility of any getting down in the pit.

EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Phenolic compound may cause burns through contact with skin or eyes. This is aggravated by sunlight - volatiles from pitches burn readily. Dust is explosive in certain concentrations.

Combines chemically with blood hemoglobin preventing it from picking up oxygen. Toxic limits 100 ppm for 8-hour work period. 1,500 to 2,000 ppm for 60 minutes very dangerous. MAC = 50 parts per million Explosive limits = 12.5-747. volume in air
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Hemoglobin of blood has an affinity for CO 300 times greater than for oxygen. Toxic effects show headache, confusion, nausea and collapse in varying degrees and depending upon concentration. The most widespread poisonous gas in industry and very frequently en countered in all phases of industry and the home where incomplete combustion of carbon monacerous materials may occur. Death occurs due to lack of oxygen, and chemical asphyxiation occurs with production of cherry red color to skin.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Exhaust all fumes, replacing with uncontaminated air. Proper ventilation, proper adjustment of burning and carburetor units to decrease production CO. Oxygen breathing apparatus should be available.

EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: POISONOUS GAS
MAC is 1 ppm. Irritant to upper respiratory tract and also toxic to the deeper tissues. Exposure to concentrations of 40-60 ppm for 30-60 minutes may have serious or fatal consequences. Small amounts cause prolonged coughing. During fluxing, chlorides of the various constituents of the alloy as well as free chlorine will be given off. Removed via stack if dampers correctly set and hose, valves, and fluxing pipe are in good operating order.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL:
Provide adequate ventilation. Careful handling of cylinders necessary. Check frequently on valves, hoses, and connections on fluxing equipment. Proper regulation of furnace drafts to remove fumes to the outside.

EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Mercury is a poisonous metal and because of the vapors normally given off, a serious hazard exist whenever it is used or handled. Very 6mall amounts of vapor given off at room temperature may cause poisoning. Mercury may also be absorbed through skin membranes on contact and cause poisoning. MAC is 0.1 to 0.25 mg per cubic meter.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: All mercury should be kept in closed containers to prevent the escape of vapors. Local exhaust'systems should be used where necessary. Spilled mercury should be picked up by a siphon pump at once. Rotation of workers is advisable. A mercury detector should be used to warn of dangerous concentrations. This mixture reacts with water to form nitrous acid and nitric acid.

EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Dust contains fluorides and other bath materials which are very irritating to nose and throat. Sometimes contain free alkali up to 15%. This can irritate skin and may cause burns.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Provide adequate ventilation, collect dust at source. Avoid pro longed skin contact.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: All except Animate basically a water soluble salt of 2, 4 - Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid usually abbreviated 2, 4-D. Ammate is an ammonium sulfate. These compounds may also contain arsenical compounds.
EXPLANATION. .OF. .HAZARDS: Poisonous if taken internally. Contact with the skin will cause irritation. May be absorbed through the skin.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: Composition of the flux varies with the metal upon which the work is being done. Innumerable type having various trade names - flux, may contain silicates, carbonates, fluorides, oxides or nitrates.
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Coated rods release Iron oxide and fume. No harmful amounts released except In confined quarters. Welding on aluminum or stainless steel Introduces a fluoride exposure from the flux. Prolonged inhalation of the fluoride fumes will lead to irritation of the nasal passages and continued exposures might result in Fluorosis.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Local exhaust ventilation advisable. Forced ventilation when welding in enclosed tanks.

DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES: Made in various sized and of various metals. Usually coated with a fluxing material.
EXPLANATION OF HAZARDS: Using steel electrodes with inadequate ventilation may cause bronchial cough. Welder's lungs may have sufficient deposition of iron oxide to show siderosis. Coated rods release iron oxide and fumes which may be harmful only in confined quarters with no ventilation. Aluminum rod or welding on aluminum introduces fluoride exposure which causes nasal irritation. Zinc coated surfaces coated with lead paints will release zinc oxide or lead oxide which can cause metal fume fever.
RECOMMENDED CONTROL: Adequate ventilation or local exhaust systems. Protective goggles, clothing, etc. Rotation of workers welding in confined areas.
