9,3.9.9 Cycling procedure,
9.3.9.9.1 Class A sealants. Cure the test assemblies at standard conditions for 1-. days, following this curing period remove the spacers from the specimens and proceed as follows:
1. Immerse the specimens in distilled or deionized water for 7 days,
2. following the immersion period, remove specimens from water and hand-flex twice about
yZ degrees to check bond and cohesion. If r.o failure occurs, compress one specimens 25 percent
of the nominal half inch (to 3/S inch) using a "C" clamp and 3/S inch blocks to held specimens
_
in place. Place compressed specimens in a draft over, maintained at 155" + 2 ?, for 7 days -vfig. 7d;.
3. A-fter the over, treatment, allow the specimens to cool to standard temperature ar.l place them in a machine which automatically co.mpresses the joints from the nominal 1/2 inch width 00 3/5 inch and extends the joints to 5/2 inch in a continuous movement at the rate of l/i ir.cn per hour (fig. Sa). A total number cf 10 cycles are completed. One cycle is defined as follows: compression from the nominal l/2 inch width to 3/2 inch, followed by extension to 5/2 inch and then compression mo 1/2 inch. At the completion of the 10 cycles extend tr.e specfm.er.s (by hand crank) to 5/2 inch, insert blocks, remove specimens, and examine for bond and cohesion breaks (fig. 7e). If the specimen,s are rated as failure at this stage the Durability test is stopped.
-. The final portion of the Durability test consists of compressing the specimens mo j/o inch ywimh. "0" clamp, and while in compression are held in the over, for 06 mo 20 hours. They are then removed from the over., cooled to standard temperature,^clamps ar.d spacers removed, and placed ir. an extension machine in a freezer maintained at -i5`JF. The specimens are extended to 5/2 inch while they are being cooled down to -15" ?. u/ The rate of extension is l/S ir.cn per hour. Or, completion of the extension the specimens are blocked at 5/0 inch, removed from freezer, allowed to warm up to standard temperature. They are examined for bond and cohesion breaks as wel-- as permanent deformation. The daily compression-extension cycles described in part 9- above are performed a maximum of 10 times or stopped at any time when the loss of bond cohesion or deformation exceeds i square inch among the three specimens.
ar.d
9.3.9.9.2 Class 3 sealants. The test procedure is the same as that described in 9,3.9.9.1 with the following exceptions:
`
(a) All compression movements consist of 12 l/2 percent of the nominal half inch width, i.e, , to 7/I0 inch instead of 3/2 inch.
(b) All extension movements consist of 12 l/2 percent of the nominal half inch width, i.e., to 9/lc inch instead of 5/3 inch.
V Regardless of the amount of recovery of the sealant after the "C" clamps are removed, the jaws of the extension machine are set .at 3/5 inch before extension is started in the freezer.

Before constructing the test assemblies, clean the test surfaces with methyl ethyl ketone cr a similar solvent followed by a thorough washing with a detergent solution and a final rinse with clear water. Place a strip of 1 inch paper masking tape across the width of the plate so that the lower edge of the tape is parallel to the lower edge of the plate and I inches above it (fig. 3 a) . After conditioning not less than 2/0 g. of compound and curing agent for at least 2w hours at standard, conditions, spread a properly mixed portion or. the surface cf the plate to a thickness of 1/5 inch over an area from the top edge of the tape to one bottom, of the plate and the entire width of the plate (fig. 65), The cloth, approximately 6 by 3 Irenes is smeared with the compound at one end over an area of 3 by 3 inches ar.d forced into one clot.n using a spatula. The impregnated cloth is laid over the 2/5 inch layer of compound without entrapping air. Then the assembly is placed between i/l6 inch spacer bars ar.d the surfaces of the cloth rolled with a glass rod so that the thickness of the compound between the clot.n and the surface is l/lS inch (fig. SC), Prepare two aluminum, glass ar.d r.ortar specimens as described above for each sample 01' sealant. Apply primer to the dry surfaces only when specified and supplied by the manufacturer ar.d agreed upon by the purchaser. After preparation, allow one test specimen to cure ir. air for It days at standard conditions followed by an additional 7 days curing while completely immersed in distilled or deionized water at standard temperature. .After the specimen has cured about 7 days, coat the cloth with a thin layer (i/32 inch or less) of the mixed sample to protect the cloth from, moisture sr.d to minimize cloth adhesion failure after water immersion (fig. 3b). After Id days curing in air ar.d immediately before immersing the specimen ir. water for 7 days, the surface of the fabric shall be cut through to the base surface with a sharp razor blade leaving two strips of sealant and fabric I inch wade, separated by a space approximately 3/6 inch wide (fig. SZ,. Immediately following the 21 day cure, prepare the specimen for testing by wiping it cut', and releasing 1 inch of the cloth and masking tape from, the base. Then place the specimen t'. the testing machine ar.d peel the cloth back at am. angle of leu2 (fig. 9). The rate of separation of the Jaws of the machine shall be 2 inches per minute, rul sealant for 1 minute, and note the average value in pounds indicated by a dial or recording cnart on the nacnine. If the cloth peels from the sealant during testing, disregard are values. In such instance cut the compound across with a sharp razor blade in order to get separation at the interface to the test surface, Test four strips for each base material (aluminum, glass, etc., and record the average peel values in pounds. Hecord the percentage loss ir. bond and cereeior of each test.
4.4 Adhesion ir. peel after ultra-violet radiation exposure through glass Prepare and cure twe plate glass peel strength specimens as specified in 4.3.10.1. At the er.i of the 14th day cure period, place the test speciter.s with the sealant surface facing away from, the light source cr. the drum, cf ar. accelerated weathering machine as specified in 4.3.7. Zxpo_se the specimens to the UV radiation for 200 hours with or without water spray. Following the exposure, immerse the specimens ir. distilled or deionized water for 7 cays and obtain peel strength and record data as prescribed in 4.3.10.1.
2/ Oxher sucstrates such as precast stone, brick, marble, steel, etc. shall be used ir. tr.e
test in place of or in addition to the standard materials when requested by the purchaser.
2/ The test snarl be periormed when tr.e sea_ar.t bonding area to grass may oe adverser/ affected by the sun's rays passing through the grass ar.d should be requested by the purchaser.

The primer or conditioner is designed to assure adhesion of the compound t: a specioie surfaoe. In ail cases wncre primers cr coniitiensrs are recocsteniei with a oomgouuo, it is advisable to have the durability and peel strength tests made with tbs primer in .question.
,t,i.? whenever possible the compound shall not be applied to a joint at t-_-.peratures u.ni-r -. F, At suc.n temperatures a film of mcisture is likely to form cr. the surfaces of the joint so a result of condensation. Inis moisture film which can. be entirely invisible under certain aomrsph .ric conditions may prevent the formation of a strong bond between the- compound and the substrate.
5,1,5 wherever possible a back-up material should be used wit.-, sealant ir. a moving joint to unsure good bond to sides of the joint. The back-up material should be completely inert, nonrigid, ar.d also shall .not for::, a strong bond to the sealant itself. Tr.e sealant producer sr.culi recommend the proper back-up material for his product for a particular substrate and joint design.
6,1,9 Although the compounds are generally available in. several colors, a freshly cured, compound may be painted any desired color provided the producer approves such procedure.
