ATTENTION: SAFETY ENGINEERS
Gentlemen:
Please govern your activities according to the following direc tions received in a letter from Dr. Machle:
"In reply to your letter of March 11, asking about tanks that have been spiked after tank records were taken, we wish to advise you that it would be highly desirable to bring the records up to date for all such tanks.
"Will you therefore advise the safety engineers accordingly. In most situations location cards have been filled out and all that will be neces sary at this time is a corrected, record for the tank in question.
"We would further like to have samples of sludge from tanks that have been spiked and are being cleaned for the first time since the spiking. As you know there are many tanks in which spiking has been suspected but on which the actual history is not obtainable. Samples need, not be ob tained from these nor of course from other tanks. What we are interested in at this time are samnlos from spiked tanks on which there is knowledge of the time of the addition of lead, and the manner and quantity added.
"No efforts need be made to secure these sanroles quickly - some time will be required for the analyses and it will be satisfactory if material is . collected in the usual fashion at the time these tanks are visited for supervision of cleaning. Samples may be collected into new pint or quart mason jars purchased locally and rinsed, with water and dried, no special cleansing being required. Labeling and shipment should be carried out as previously done."
Very trulsr yours,
