SUBJECT: MIDAS CONVERSION TO ASBESTOS-FREE MATERIAL
FROM:
W. R. Britland
TQ: B. M, Luts
After much discussion on the subject, we are still unable to provide Midas with a detailed program for this changeover. For the purposes of our planning, as well as theirs, I believe that we must select a date when we will start to produce asbestos-free material for Midas.
I propose that we designate March 1 as the target date on which new production for Midas, with some exceptions to be described later, will be in asbestos-free material. Once this change has been made, we can backfill our inventories of friction material with asbestos-free, allowing for the depletion of organic inven tory throughout Abex and Rayloc.
By marking March 1 as the date for this transition, your depart ment can develop an approximation as to how long it will take to deplete our organic inventories for Midas, by part number, as compared to the February, 1986, SPIF. The same type of informa tion will be sought at Rayloc. The objective of gathering this information is to provide Midas with a timetable for when they can expect asbestos-free material to reach their warehouses.
As far as the implementation of this conversion is concerned, some points are already clear:
1) Foreign Disc Pads - CanParts
The switch to the CanParts 983 formula can be made as soon as Midas makes a decision on the packaging of asbestos-free material. You will be notified by this office when such a decision is made.
2) Foreign Disc Pads - Frendo
Until such time as Frendo is ready to ship asbestos-free product, the CanParts 983 formula should be sourced for all foreign disc pad requirements. Again, it will be the notification from Midas on packaging that triggers this conversion.
