T Mr. Dean Wilson General Superintendent Homestead Works Nk w. c. Janes, Manager Environmental Health Asbestos Survey forge Shop As reguested, an Environmental Health survey was conducted on March 29, 197$ et the forge Shop of the Homestead Works by T. M. Civic, Environmental Health Engineer. The purpose of the survey was to determine if the aluminized asbestos apparel worn by the scarfers during scarfing operations constituted an asbestos exposure. The present OSHA standard for' exposure to asbestos dust i? 5.0 fibers, longer than 5 micrometers, per cubic centimeter o'J air, based on an 8-hr. time-weighted average exposure, on July 1, 1974, the t-hr* time-weighted average limit will De reduced to 2.0 fibers/csr of air. OSHA has recently proposed to further reduce the daily 8-hr. average exposure limit to 0.5 fibers/as3 of air. The time-weighted average ejassures. of the scarfers monitored during scarfing operations were found to be well below the present federal standards, as well as the proposed^osHA ' limit ot~6.i Xibers/CST or air. Airborne asbestos concentrations ranged from 0.04 ibert/cm3 of air to 0.19 fibers/em3 of air, while time-weighted average exposures of 0.04 fibers/ca3 of air and 0.04 fibers/cm3 of air were obtained for the two scarfers monitored. These test results indicate the aluminized asbestos clothing worn by the scarfers releases asbestos; consequently, the scarfers are exposed to aabestos filters and should be included in the annual medical monitoring program outlined in Federal Register, Vol. 39, Wo. 123, June 27, 1974, Section 1910.93. The asbestos fibers probably become airborne when the coat is put on or ramoved, a sample taken after all operations had ceased indicated there was no exposure to asbestos after opera tions had ceased and the coat was no longer handled.
