Kehoe, "University of Cincinnati, Dept, of Preventive Medicine &-Industrial Health, The Kettering Laboratory, College of Medicine, Eden Avenue, Cincinnati 19, Ohio, U. S. A. Dear Dr. Kehoe, I think the data showing that lead induces kidney tumours is quite convincing, although all the experiments in which this has been achieved have been concerned with quite large doses. The first demonstration is reported in the paper by Zollinger (Arch. Path. Anat., 1953, 323, 69*0. These experiments were repeated by Walpole and Williams, then van Esch and van Genderen have induced kidney tumours by feeding lead acetate and Dr. Dukes and I confirmed this finding. In .these experiments the rats were given 1% of lead acetate in the diet and all the rats which lived for more.than, one year developed kidney tumours. As I Said in an earlier letter, I think it is possible that lead might produce tumours of some other organ in man, and we think that these ate worth looking for. Yours sincerely.
