Kanzler SUBJECT PEMEX At Burlington At Burlington date March 23, 1971 copy tc 11 13 Carr As requested by you, attached is a chromatogram'of a Dow vinyl chloride monomer (MVC). The methyl chloride level was analyzed to be 9 parts per million (ppm) and the 1,3 butadiene level was found to be 0.3 ppm (normally reported in Burlington analyses as < 1 ppm). Heavy ends were reported as none detected. Our experience with Dow MVC during the early 1971 shipments showed no heavy end contamination for this monomer. If any heavy end contamination is present., it would be probably in the < 1 ppm range and cannot be detected through the background noise of the chromatograph. A verification of the 1,1 dichloroethylene peak will be made as soon as a sample of 1,2 dichloroethylene is received. While we have not established relative retention times for our analysis, the relative retention times found in the literature (G.M. Sassu, P. Zilio-Grandi, A. Conte; J. Chromatog. 34 (1968) 394-398) for MVC analysis show the following relative retention times (1,3 butadene=l) for 35C column temperature: 1,1 Dichloroethylene transl,2-Dichloroethylene 1,1 Dichloroethane 4.78 9.60 14.22 The column used in Burlington is similar and is expected to have similar retention behavior. The results of the above verifica tion attempt will be forwarded to you as soon as they are avail able . Attachment FWK/jt F.W. Kanzler COLORITE 013658 COLORITE 013659
