SUBJECT: Salmonella/Mammalian-Microsome Mutagenicity Testing
The Ames spot test for mutagenicity screening of chemical substances was used to examine the samples listed below. The equivalent of 10 meg, based on percent composition, was tested against each of 3 Indicator strains (Ta 1537, TA 98, TA 100) together with arachlor-induced rat mlcrosomes (S-9 mix). A reference standard 2-aminofluorene, which requires microsomal activation for significant mutagenicity, was highly active at 10 meg and 1 meg in this test. Three samples (marked with an asterisk) were incompatible with the standard test solvent dimethyl sulfoxide; the discs were therefore saturated with each sample in its undiluted state.
The results of these tests do not indicate mutagenic activity in any of the samples submitted. Please inform me if the concentrations tested are in adequate for your needs. However, we are unable to accomodate testing on additional samples without prior approval from M. T. Case, Chairman of the Mutgenicity Committee.
