VINYL RAW MATERIALS
VISTA
The Aberdeen Chemical Plant has recently begun implementation of statistical process control (SPC) in the vinyl unit. One of the major elements of SPC involves relationships with raw material suppliers. Variation in raw materials causes variation in the final resin product. These variations in raw materials have not been monitored in the past. Plans are being developed to monitor raw material properties using statistical techniques. The purpose of this letter is to gather input from R&D on which raw material properties are important and why.
Several raw material suppliers currently include certificates of analysis with each shipment. These raw materials, along with the properties listed on the certificates of analysis, are given in Table I. The following information is requested for each raw material:
1. What effect does each listed property have on resin production and why?
2. Are there any other properties associated with the raw material which could affect resin production?
3. What is the acceptable range for each property?
Most raw material suppliers do not include certificates of analysis on shipments. These raw materials are listed in Table II. The following information is requested for each raw material.
1. What properties of each raw material affect resin produc-. tion and why?
2. What is the acceptable range for each property?
It is realized that some of the requested information may not be available, particularly on acceptable ranges for each property.
One raw material not included on either table is water. Are there properties of the water used in vinyl production which should also be monitored?
