June 29, 1978 Sub J ect: Trans11 e File: No. 6.13-Asbestos R. 3. MacCaulay reviewed with Johns Mansville Company the composition of Transite, in which he reported in the November, 1975, Safety and Health Newsletter. The following information was given: Transite consists of asbestos fibers held together with a cement binder. Approximate composition is 70% cement, 255 asbestos, and 55 silica. Although the fibers are normally tightly embedded in the binder, cutting the material or exposure to some chemical environments can release the fibers to the atmosphere. Amongst other uses, Transite is used for roofing, siding, and waterpipe. In discussions on June 2d, 1968, MacCaulay stated that under certain chemical exposure, Transite can deteriorate into a powdery form. K. C. Crawford PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT U)\/'6/Wg&
