When Charles Marshall of New Shrewsbury, N. 3., a very active hosiery manufacturer of 58, became alarmed at the constant numbness in his left leg and a painful swelling behind the knee, he went to see his doctor. The doctor diagnosed the trouble m an aneurysm--a. large, permanent dilation of the artery,- _ - ___; ........ "There's" a very large blood dot in it," the physician aided sym pathetically. Progressive .surgeons dared to look forward to a plentiful supply of soft and pliable fibrous tubes, easy to sterilize and preserve, available at relatively low cost. The ideal lt.il*, the doctors decided, would have low porosity, high tensile .strength and a very high degree of chemical resistance. Is. also would keep the deposited fibrin layer to a minimum; a heavy deposit increases flic danger of blond clots and delays healing. This meant that a good synthetic urtcry would have t.o lie compatible with body tissues l.o promote rapid and permanent healing.
