If the job has been previously* painted and is peeling, scaling off or cracking, burn oil all the old paint. If this is not done, the new coat of paint cannot be expected to stick. See that the surface is perfectly dry. Moisture is what often causes blistering, cracking, scaling and like troubles. Moisture is always present in green or pitchy Lumber, and after rain, a heavy dew or a fog. Do not psunt in froity weather, or over too glossy a surface. Any paint will ^ctiwP under such con ditions. ' . Do not use boiled oil in thinning S. W.P, Boiled oil never dries thoroughly and always leaves the surface in bad condition for repainting. Pure raw linseed oil should be used; it dries through and through and learn a good hard surface for repainting. Never add japan to the paint to hasten drying. S. W. P, has just the quantity of dryer in it to dry safely and properly, ' Do not use Ochres for primer. The priming coat is the foundation coat, and if it is not right, good painting cannot be done. The Sherw/n-Witflams Primer to made specially to give the best results. Where it is not used, thin S.W.P. vrilh one gallon of raw linseed oil to each gallon, of paint for the priming coat. For -best results on new work apply one coat of The Sherwin-Williams Primer ana two coats of paint. Apply the paint in thin coats. Brush it out thorough ly. It` better to apply thTee thin coats than two heavy coats. If put on too thick, it is liable to crack or peel. Do not Jet one coat of paint stand for any length of time before applying the next coat and expect good results. S> Standard Measure WHY PREPARED PAINT IS BEST, AINT is sold in two ways--prepared and unprepared. Where you B can trust the maker prepared paint is much the better. Before paints were prepared and sold ready for use the principal materials used for painting- were white lead and linseed oil. Some still think that these ingredients make the best paint. They do not. They are good as far as they go, but they do not go far enough. It has been found, by many severe tests and much careful experimenting, that the combination of zinc, lead, and linseed oil makes the best paint. It is well known that white lead soon after being applied powders and chalks, and for this reason is not durable. By adding correct proportions of zinc this tendency is corrected, and the paint lasts much longer. Good prepared paint contains zinc as well as lead and oil. The many "cheap" mixtures that are on the market to-day have caused much prejudice against the use of prepared paint. Unfortunately, it is a very', easy matter to adulterate prepared paint and this is so frequently done that its reputation has suffered. It should not be forgotten, however, that lead and oil are as easily, and as often, adulterated, and there is a good deal more risk in using paint made from them than in using a prepared paint that bears the name of a reputable manufacturer. THE SHERWIN-WILLIAMS PAINT (Prepared) S.W.P, enjoys a higher reputation as well as a larger sale than any other prepared paint in the world. It has been on the market for over thirty years and is sold all over North America and in many other parts of the globe. It is a genuine lead, zinc, and linseed oil paint. The sale of it increases every year. It is as good paint as is possible to make. The man who buys lead and oil and prepares it himself, or has a painter prepare it, can not possibly make a paint equal to THE SHERWIN-WILLIAMS PAINT (Prepared) S.W.P. It is hand work against machine work; it is mixing with a stick and guessing at the quantities against mixing on exact formulas and grinding withpowerful machinery, Ifitwere notforprejudice nobodywould ever buy lead and oil when they could get THE SHERWIN-WILLIAMS PAINT with its guarantee. If you have no photograph or drawing, send a short description of your buildings. State what their present color is, and if much foliage is near or not. Give general dimensions of structures and condition of surfaces. On receipt of this information, our special artist will prepare and send to you specifications giving most appropriate colors, and the quantity of paint required. Mo charge whatever is made for this work. QUANTITY OF S.W. P. REQUIRED. jO ascertain the quantity of 5.W.P. required for two coats; Measure the distance around the building; multiply that by the average height, which will give the square feet of siding; divide that by 300, (the number of square feet S. W. P. covers two coats to the gallon) which will give you approximately the number of gallons of S. W. P. to buy for the body; then take i-8lh to 1-5th of this quantity, which will give you the amount for the carries and other trimmings; ascertain the square feet i'\ floors and ceilings of porches, then divide each, as before, by 300, which will give the quantity to buy. " Where possible employ a goodpainter. Stir the paint thoroughly from the bottom before attempting to use it. Success in painting depends upon the use of goud material carefully applied on a proper surface under favorable conditions. The important thing is to know what to do and bow to do it, and what not to do and how to avoid it. The Sherwin-Williams Prepared Paint is the best paint ing material made, and used properly will give perfect results. Good results should never be expected when paint is applied under the following conditions-. Over an Ochre Primer, particularly when mixed with boiled linseed oil. Over a surface which is wet or frosty. Over a surface which is covered with smoke or grease. Over green or pitchy lumber. Over a previous coat of paint which is not thoroughly dry. BE PARTICULAR ABOUT THE PRIMING. V cracking, peeling or stalling occurs on buildings painted with good prepared paint, it ' is, iu the majority of cases, traceable tu the priming coat. The importance of a correct priming coat is not generally appreciated. It is the foundation, and if that is wrong, no paint can wear satisfactorily. Anything is nof good enough for priming; the very best is none too good. THE SHEStm-WfUfAKS UQOID PHIMER is a scientific under-coating and makes the best foundation on which to apply good paint. It costs 110 more than a primer made from cheap Ochre, either paste or dry. It is furnished in heavy form and should be thinned with a gallon of pure flaw linseed oil to each gallon of primer. It is ground very fine, making it go farther. It is a light straw color, over which the budy and trimming colors will show up well, It is put up in the same sire packages as S.W.P.--quarts, half gallons, gallons, and five gallon packages.- Don't throw this folder awsy. You'll need it some day, even if you don't need paint to-day. S.W.P. is sold only through dealers who have secured the agency for its sale. They are mixed very thoroughly and are ground to the last degree of fineness by specially con structed machinery. They brush out smoothly and evenly and are easily applied. They have good covering capacity and will cover one-third more surface than paint made from lead alone. Pure Colored Paint and Pure White Paint dry with a full oil gloss if properly thinned as directed. They wear well and if used according to directions will not crack, peel or scale off. They never chalk. They hold their color for a long time and are not affected by acids or sul phurous gases. They are particularly suited for use in natural gas and oil regions. They are the best paints of their kind in the market to-day, and always give satisfaction and save money. i SELECTION OF COLORS FOR MINTING. LHILE the utmost freedom should be allowed every one to exercise his own taste in the selection of colors, a few hints as to harmony and contrast will be of service in malting such selection as will be most likely to give satisfaction when the work is completed. The buildings and.their surroundings should be considered as a whole, that the finished picture may be pleasing. If the buildings are well surrounded by foliage, the light tints make a pleasing contrast. If they stand alone, or if there is no foliage in the vicinity, any of the colors will look well if properly trimmed. It is almost a universal custom to use a darker color for trimmings than for the body. While this is quite proper on many styles of plain architecture, it is not always so; indeed, most of the more modern and elaborately finished frame buildings seem to require several colors, carefully arranged to harmonize, adapting the colors to suit the architecture. Where it is desired to pre serve fully the design of the architect, the projecting parts, called high lights, should be a lighter color than the receding parts, called shadows. The parts nearest the ground should, by means of dark, strong colors, be made to look heavier than the upper parts. Where more than one color is required, some knowledge of the natural laws of color har mony is necessary to determine what is best to use in each instance. No simple, concise rule can be given that will supply the lack of a natural or acquired education in harmony. i 0007-SWP-000176893 On the other side of this sheet, opposite each sample of color, will be found numbers; those t; in large, full-faced type designate the shade shown, those in smaller type are the suggested num- V bers for trimming. This is assuming that the color indicated by the large type is to be the body ! or prevailing color to be used. While these suggestions are made with a view to their use on ex- tenors, the same idea as to color combinations will hold good anywhere, A house, both outside and in, should be painted to harmonize with the architecture, and any general rules are often ': unsatisfactory. We have given much study to the artistic combination of colors, and are ready to give any information on the subject that we can. If you are undecided what colors to choose, send us a photograph or architect's drawing of your building, and we will submit, free of charge, suitable , suggestions for harmonious combinations. AMOUNT REQUIRED. O rule can be given that will give the exact amount of paint required in each case, be H cause the surface to be covered, as well as the manner in which the paint is put on, will vary in nearly every instance. The average amount required for two good coats on a smooth surface of new pine lumber may be found as follows: Multiply the length by the height on each side of the building or room you wish to paint, Add these amounts together and you will have the total number of square feet to be covered. Divide this by forty-five, because one ponnd of Pure Colored Paint or Pure White Paint will cover forty-five square feet, and you will have the number of pounds to purchase. For old or rough or porous surfaces fifteen to twenty per cent, more paint will be required. If you figure the amount of pure white lead that would be required, then buy 2$ or 33 per cent, less of Pure Colored Paint, because it covers so much more surface. DIRECTIONS FOR USING. URE Colored Paint and Pure White Paint arc semi-ready and should be thinned for use with pure raw linseed oil. Take great care to see that you use only pure linseed oil. -K.iil The market is full of substitutes for linseed oil, which are often offered as "just as good" as the pure article. Do not use them. Avoid so-called boiled oil. It is more often raw oil adulterated with special dryers and other questionable liquids. Be sure that the oil you use is pure and the dryers made by reputable manufacturers and you will always get good results. The quantity of oil to use will depend largely upon weather conditions and upon the surface to be painted. Pure Colored Paint and Pure White Paintwill take more oil than white lead alone. It's best to be guided by the judgment of an experienced painter on this point. When the weather is not favorable for drying, add about a quart of The S-W. Extra Japan Dryer to one hundred pounds of the paint in addition to the necessary oil in order to hasten drying. Mix the paint thoroughly. See that it is well broken up and thoroughly incorporated with oil. It is then ready for use. .
