In answer to your questions concerning the continued use of asbestos pipe gaskets, the company's policy is to eliminate the use of all asbestos containing products which have feasible substitutes. To accomplish this policy a company wide survey was made of all asbestos in use and a list of suitable substitutes compiled. The Sherwin Plant survey and report dated 4-30-84 are attached for your information. Note the last paragraph on page 2 of the report says that no feasible substitute has been found for many applications of the asbestos pipe gasket. Therefore, the plant should continue using asbestos pipe gaskets and follow appropriate work practices to minimize employee exposure.
We should continue to seek suitable substitutes for any asbestos products in use at the plant. Central Engineering has included a list of products and manufacturers in Standard Engineering Procedure No. 2.15 which should be used instead of asbestos.
Also enclosed is a copy of Industrial Hygiene Dept. Bulletin #122 which covers "Asbestos Demolition and Removal."
Let me know if you need any further information on this subject.
