BENNETT Lv/C/ RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE A meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Committee was held on June 26, 1958. The following attended: J. B. Lowry, G. Decker, E. E. Hannah, C. L. Huey, B. L. Tiedemann, F. H. Huyette, and I. K. Kaighin. A bacteriological analysis was received from the Hygiene Laboratory, Iowa City, on a sanitary water sample that was collected in Building 812. The water was reported to be bacterially satisfactory. Plans are continuing on the modification of a Remelt holding hearth in order to process X2020 alloy. The Committee was brought up-to-date on seme problems that have arisen in casting the metal. The Committee will follow the development of the project and it is expected that we will receive information on any special problems. The Chemical Laboratory reported that a product marketed under the name Chlorothene is comparable in properties and price to the solvent Vythene which is approved for office use. Chlorothene is produced by the Dow Chemical Company. The Storeroom and Purchasing Division will be informed that Chlorothene is a suitable substitute. A supply of ear plugs wbb purchased and they are being issued by the Medical Department. These ear protection devices are to be used in the Shear Department slitter area. Acoustical treatment of the Blitter chopper housing has proved to be ineffective and other methods of noise elimination are impractical. The Mine Safety Appliance Company "Ear Defender" plugs are inexpensive and seem to be effective in reducing the noise level. Dr. Cralley, Company Hygienist, recom mends this make of ear plug. The Engineering Division is continuing to work on the problem of blowing the smoke away from the Bav operator which should reduce the nuisance and thus minimize the problem from the Labor Delations standpoint. There were no cases of chlorine inhalations reported to the Medical Department during the . past month. F. H. BENNETT RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE The Industrial Hygiene Committee did not hold an April meeting in accordance with the Committee's revised policy. A report from the State Hygienic Laboratory on the sanitary water analysis of a sample taken from the Cafeteria, Building 802, was received. The water was reported to be bacterially satisfactory. The Rolling Mill Division requested that we investigate the possibility of hazards to personnel who come into contact with Alcoa No. 2 Joint Compound. The compound is a petroleum grease containing a detergent and a compound to remove oxides. According to information received from T. B. Bonney, Alcoa Research Laboratory, the action of the compound on workers' skin is not serious, and those who are not usually subject to allergies will probably be unaffected to any noticeable extent. In several years of handling the joint compound, no cases have been reported which can be ascribed to the use of the compound. ( , > One case of an accidental chlorine inhalation was reported to the Medical Department recently. A Pipe Shop employee was exposed when a tube broke while he was changing fluxing tubes. The employee was able to return to his regular work within one hour following the exposure.
