Our Association has giver, due c o n * ictrk iicn to the above centioned subject and s u tn it to you the follow ing recommendations.
InafT-uch as any dust t/hich s ig h t occur in any of our operations during the application of m ateriel in which asbestos sig h t be used i s not of any d if ferent character from the ordinary dust th a t is d evelor.ed in thousands of occupations, we fe e l th a t i t i r adequately c la s s ifie d under Standard 45 in the general cle re ific a tio n of "naaarcs and P ro tectiv e Devices.'* The re la tiv e quantity of asbestos in the n s te r in ls th a t use the name "asbestos" i s quite s s a ll. As a n a tte r of f a c t, magnesia i s 85? of most of the pipe covering

In cur e n tire p ra c tic e of handling asbestos in the S ta te o f Y.'a:hington, and our Association members have been in th is business over 40 y ears, we have no knowledge of anyone who is even acquainted with the coined word Asbestosis" much le s s ever hevirg contracted the d isease, YTe fe e l th a t i f such a so-called disease were advertised to the general p ublic, and our workmen ir. p a rtic u la r, th a t i t would give then an excuse upon which to place claims fo r a l l so rts of a llie d ailm ents and our p a rtic u la r in d u stry would be unduly burdened by such p a ra s ite s .
Our C ennittee, consisting of Ur. V. S. Jenkins and Hr. ?. F. Bellamy, who were interviewed by John E. Morgan and Herman Luft a t th e Smith Tov.tr o ffic e s of the Department of Labor 4 In d u s trie s , rep o rt th a t th e recorded sin g u lar ease of Asbestosis as noted in the medical journals occurrto' in England some 40 or 50 years ago under must unsanitary and inhuman working conditions. Sir.cc th is fe ro ip i disease has not cone to our a tte n tio n , we fe e l i t should be l e f t in Europe where i t belongs anc not brought to our lo c a l communities and e aate h y ste ria and fe a r asongest th e fam ilies of our contented workmen who are bow enjoying good h ealth and liv in g to a rip e old age, which i s sig n ific a n t of the Pipe Covarers Union as compared with th e oth er tra d e s .
These s t a t i s t i c s o f your Department confirm the soundness f t h is argument by the low ra te which we have, and we wish to contii u- enjoying t h i r lov. ra te by not allowing our standards to be a d u lte ra te d .
