OCCUPATIONAL DISEASE IN MONTANA
Dmt Botcht
The concern expressed In your letter of April 22 is certainly shared by all of as in Chicago. As a result of Senate Bill Ho* 112 being passed, we wot yon to Immediately set op the following program*
1* ATT nev employees most be tested not later than two weeks from the date they are employed* Any new applicant for employment who cannot pass the physical test cannot be hired unless there are special reasons which ore submitted to the Chicago Office and approved by the officers of the company before the employee is pat on the payroll. It would bo a very exceptional case where we would Mrs a non who is not able to pass our physical*
2* All present employees shoal i receive a physical examination within the time limit permitted by Senate Bill No* 112* As of April 22 yon say we have about five months left. The bill was effective March 7# 1959, and therefore all tests must be completed prior to September 7 of this year* When the resuits of the test have been made, any employee who's health would be endangered due to his present employment, mast either be pat or. e nev job or some other arrangement made so that the haiard is eliminated.
*
I am sore you appreciate that any employee who is found to have silicosis must be reported to the state and If such employee should become totally
disabled, be would be under the old lav which is paid out of public funds and at $65*00 per month*
The tests suggested by Dr. Cairns seem to be very complete. I believe that his estimate of $1,500 for these tests would encompass over 100 people* If this is true, we certainly agree to go along with Dr. Cairns' recemendation* If there is something radically different from what I have just recorded, please advise the Chicago office in detail, where the difference might be*

RELATIVE TO OLEUM TAILOR
Glenn Taylor la definitely a case that should be reported to the state as haring a respiratory allaent* With this report he would certainly come wider the old statute and we would not be subject to the penalties that are now in Senate Bill lo* 112*
The other four wen with which you hare had respiratory problems should be carefully tested with a chest X-ray at least every six months* If they are not able to continue their occupation where there is a hazard, they should be put on some other work at the earliest possible moment*
Tom should further discuss with Dr. Cairns the best possible follow-up examination* It is our feeling here that chest X-rays at least erezy 12 months should be mandatory* If there are some ou.-.er recommendations, we would be glad to hare them* Please let me have your views on this letter at the earliest possible moment* Also the program that you in tend te set up to complete the recomendations made*
