McELDOWNY In investigating for the Office of Scientific Research and Development a project concerned with the emergency handling of drinking water in containers previously used for gasoline, our study has progressed to the point where some field studies are required to round out the picture. Some field tests have been completed or arranged for, but we have encountered some difficulty in obtaining a sufficient number of 50"gallon drums to complete our study. For our purposes, the drums should have been in continual service for transporting leaded gasoline and we understand that occasional drums of aviation gasoline are received by your local bulk station but that the drums are shipped out immediately after being emptied. It has therefore been suggested that we contact you so that the proper order can be issued to your local bulk plant representative to hold for our tests five 50-ga.llon drums previously used for aviation or other leaded gasoline. These drums will be cleaned and water stored in them for 8 days, samples for testing purposes will be taken from each drum at the end of 1, 2, ij., and 8 day3.
