Asbestos Content of Insulation MaterialsSheet and Tin Mill Areas
This report gives the results of a survey made to determine the asbestos content of insulation materials in sheet and tin areas of the Primary and Flat Rolled Division. The samples were collected in late January and February, 1984. The survey was prompted by OSHA activity and Corporate Safety concern} asbestos is becoming increasingly recognized as a cancer producing agent.
The results, given in detail in the table attached, can be summarized as follows: of 20 insulation samples analyzed by our Pittsburgh laboratory, 16 were found to contain large amounts of asbestos.
In view of these results, we recommend the following:
1. All pipe insulation and other similar insulation should be assumed to contain asbestos unless tested and found otherwise.
2. If asbestos material must be handled, precautionary measures must be followed. See the OSHA Asbestos Standard and our Fairfield Safety and Health Policy.
3. The asbestos-containing pipe insulation currently in storage should be removed from the Q-BOP construction storehouse, Sheet Mill (Sample No. 21 and 22), and disposed of in a manner which complies with OSHA and EPA regulations.
4. Asbestos-containing insulation in place within the mill should be replaced with non-asbestos substitutes as soon as practicable.
We will provide additional material testing and air monitoring services as required. Results of a similar survey in the Primary-Hot Strip Mill area will be given in another report.
