Additionally these data indicate that asbestos exposure in concert with other environmental exposures, and in particular cigarette smoking, significantly increases the risk of respiratory cancer. The existing public sensitivity to issues of environmental* hazards dictates that the Corporation exercise prudent manage ment and recognize its responsibility to the aftermarket consumers of Mopar products by providing appropriate warning labels on asbestos containing products. Labeling should be restricted to those products which have the potential of creating an asbestos dust hazard such as brake linings, clutch facings, transmission bands and heat resistant gaskets or seals. It is the recommendation of this department that the asbestos products identified above bear the following legend: CAUTION This product contains asbestos Avoid creating Dust Breathing asbestos dust may result in serious bodily harm The technical resources of this department are available to assist you in this area. /? hm ce : M. Part numbers in the high risk categories of brake components, clutch facings, transmission bands, and heat resistant gaskets and seals have been inspected for asbestos content. At present, 301 part numbers have been identified as containing asbestos. A small number of part numbers have yet to be Inspected due to no stock being available. it Is ejected that these will be completed by the end of December 1983. Our Package Engineering department is in the process of adding warning Jabel requirements to the packaging specifications for parts confirmed as containing asbestos. All new receipts of material for asbestos containing parts are to have warning labels on their packages. A plan is being developed to label all existing inventory of asbestos^ containing parts in our depots across the country, it is estimated that this will be completed by the end of January 1984.. Labels for asbestos parts bear the following legend: _ Caution This product contains asbestos. Avoid creating dust. Breathing asbestos may result . in serious bodily harm. A copy of the label is attached. 2. Service manuals, according to our Service Publications department, for 1984 domestic passenger car and truck models contain asbestos warnings in the brake and clutch sections. Asbestos warn!ngs^for the inport service manuals are on the agenda for discussion with ' Mitsubishi Motors during a November 1983 visit by Chrysler to Japan. Copies of the warnings in the domestic service manuals are attached.
