Lewis Dear Mr. Clymer: On May 26,. 1976 an investigation was conducted at Delco-Moraine - Division of General Motors Corporation in Dayton, Ohio by Michael F. Goyda, an indus trial hygienist from the Division of Safety and Hygiene. The investigation was to evaluate conditions under which the claimant had worked. This company manufactures brake systems, transmissions, engine bearings and powered metal products. According to information furnished by Don Abbott, the supervisor of employee benefits, the claimant's work history was as follows: 1/27/71 - 2/17/71 2/18/71 - 2/25/72 2/25/72 - 4/17/72 4/17/72 - 9/25/72 9/25/72 - 12/18/72 12/18/72 - 2/5/73 2/5/73 - 2/12/73 2/12/73 - Present Dept. #19; assembles break shoes Dept. #518; light assembly' sick <, : Dept. #518; light assembly Dept. #19; assembles-break shoes Dept. #45 Dept. #19; assembles break shoes Dept. #536; assembles disc breaks It was alleged that the etching machine and impregnator in Dept. #518 were the cause of the occupational disease. The impregnation process has been changed and it operates only about once every 3 months. This operation had been automatic and now is hand operated. Air samples were collected at the etching operation for nitric add, sodium hydroxide and chromates. The air sampling equipment for sodium hydroxide consisted of a personal air sampling pump operated at 2 liters per minute and a mixed cellulose ester'' filter with a 37 millimeter diameter and a 0.8. micron pore size.- , " . . `V The air sample was collected .in the. employee's breathing zone'and the result -, is listed in Table #1.-^- ' * '-V-"!'. v ' , ;v -.,v. .... - 1. .i.*' ' - `' - An air sample was collected for chromates using a personal'sampling pump operated at 2 liters per minute and a polyvinyl chloride filter with a 37 millimeter diameter and a 5 micron pore size. The air sample was an area sample and was negative for chromates.
