September 8, 1992 Dr. Hugh J. Campbell, Ph.D. Du Pont Chemicals Brandywine Bldg. Rm. 12218 Vilmington DE 19818 Dr. Harlyn Zinray, Ph.D. Louisiana State University Hedical School Resource Center, 8th Floor 433 Bolivar Street New Orleans, LA 70112-2223 RE: Du Pont Integrated Lead Program - Bioavailability Study Doctors: Attached for your information is a copy of the study protocol entitled "Bioavailability of Lead From Soils: Phase I, Selection of Dosing Methods and Animal Model". The study described herein represents the first phase of a three-phase program designed to examine lead bioavailability in soils from Du Pont facilities, as part of a corporate effort to set protective and cost-effective clean-up levels for lead in soil. Subsequent phases of study to be conducted in the months ahead will be designed separately, based on information gained during this initial phase. In developing this protocol, every effort has been made to ensure data quality and defensibility. A twelve-person technical peer review team consisting of members from academia, industry and the regulatory community has commented on previous drafts of this document. Also, this study is being independently audited for compliance with the Good Laboratory Practices Act by members of the Stine Haskell Laboratory auditing team. The initial phase of study is scheduled to begin in October, 1992 and be completed in January, 1993. Planning of subsequent phases of study will occur shortly thereafter, in order to meet information needs from several key remediation projects. The cost of this first phase of study is estimated at $408,686. Subsequent phases of study will be costed and contracted with the university separately, based on the outcome of this Phase I work. As you review the attached protocol, we believe that you will develop an appreciation for the efforts that have gone into its development. We are very enthused about the prospects of undertaking a study that will benefit both the university and Du Pont, while addressing this important societal issue, and we hope that you will share in that enthusiasm.
