General Meeting continued: **** Minute* * rge -2- 1. president Rainey called the eeeti ng to order *t 9:43 A.M., and asked each rtrsen in ttteadtnee to stand and identify himself and hi* company affiliation* He expressed, on behalf of the members, our deep appreciation for the kind Invitation froa the "miners** to hold this nesting in Canada, and for their splendid hospitality and superb arsmgements for our group visitation to Expo 67 on the previous day* Our ai neere thank* are extended to Asbestos Corporation Limited; Hell Asbestos Tines Limited; Cassisr Asbestos Corporation Ltd*; Johns-Maaville of Canada; and Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd*, for thei r most goitrous "hosting" of the reception and luncheon at Expo 67 on June Oth* particularly appreciated was the fine Job dene by Mr* W* J.w*.Smith, chairman of the "Miners" sub-committee* in ar ranging the many details incidental to transportation of otr members to Expo 67* free ticket of admission, and the grand reception and luneheon held in the Quebec Pavilion! it proved to be a most enjoy able and never to be forgotten occasion! 2* The minutes of the tart meeting were presented for reading* Mr* J,w. Christenbury moved that reading be omitted; seconded by Mr* V.C* Streib* So voted* 9* The Financial Report was presented by vice President Sc human due to the absence of Treasurer f'artucci. Mr* Atkinson moved it be ac cepted; seconded by f r* Peele, and so voted. The report is attached to these minutes* 4* The Fibre Producers Ret'Ort was given by f;r* J.!>* Christian, pres ident of the Cassiar Asbestos Corporation* Hr* Christian, in eomenting on the present situation, said that to day *s high level of demand is catching up with the supply, and as a consequence some grades are "tight" in respect to certain of the spinning grades* Suggested that it would be advisable for spinners to check with their sourees of supply about forward requirements for special grades of spinning fibres* 5. In lieu of a prepared talk, legal Counsel P*Jay Flocten asked if there were any questions froa the floor* This proved to be an inter esting innovation - quite a few questions were asked - and **. Plocken replied to escb at considerable length* The su:eess of this ini tial trial justifies its repetition by Counsel Plocken at some future meeting* 6* Mr. Harold 1* Lynch, Davis ft Purbcr fiachinc Co*, North Andover* Mass** -gave a Technical Talk entitled: "Researching a Fresh Approach tor the Carding of Asbestos Pibers* and the Promising-New Rubber De sign for Condensing Asbestos Roving*" Mr* Lynch said that his company had developed a earding Machine for synthetic fibers that tould produce more pounds per hour than woclem worsted cards* Now have 273 units in operation on synthetic fiber* Believe they have basie concept of right approach for asbestos fio-:/, and his.company proposes to give it top priority in their development and engineering work* Some details are still to be settled aich a: type of card clothing, speeds, number of rolls, doffers* etc*. General totting continued: p*e -3 encounter difficulty on trial runs of new card using asbestos fiber . experiments ate being conducted at both North Andover, tnss** sod Charlotte* N.C. Has one renort of a very successful spinning test at a southern asbestos plant* His company solicits adviee and coop eration of asbestos plants to help bring this carding machine devel opment to the most successful conclusion possible* and for the nutu- al benefit of all* The second part of Jr* Lynch's talk was devoted to the Rub Aprons used for doodensing the asbestos roving as it comes from the carding machine* The eost of the chrome tanned leather aprons is high there is a limited supply of suitable bull-hides and these have to be bought at auction in Spain or other parts of the Buropesn conti nent: none are available elsewhere* Each hide has to be individual ly inspected before purchase* While price for chrome leather aprons is high, there is virtually no profit to Davis & Purber Co* in sup plying them due to the high claims for alleged defects* short life* or whatever* About two years ago navis ft Purber began to look for a satisfactory replacement for leather rub aprons - one that would not glare too quickly* not be unduly affected by atmospheric changes* and be free from flat spots, glued laps* or hard tfback-bone" area* At present it arrears that a grooved apron is necessary, and diamond pattern of grooving is best. The number of grooves, and depth of grooves has soae relation to the cut number of the roving being produced, at least that is the tentative thinking from experiments to date* There arc still some obstacles, for example* pure asbestos roving <no organic eoitent) and also the production of core roving* Mr* Lyneh asked cooperation of the industry in furthering the test ing of Possible replacements for leather rub aprons* saying that only thru such cooperation could success be attained* In response to s question from the floor, Mr* lynch stated that Mn company had tried to work with DuPont'a CO/IFAll material* but found it unsuitable for rub npron use* President Rainey thanked Mr* Lynch for his fine talk* and aany fa vorable consents were made about it by various members following the meeting* * T; *5* "fP?*** wef* *lvcn tbe respective chairmen as listed below* The full text of their reports is attached to tint minutes* Air Hygiene ft Wfg. Mr, Peele* who served the Institute as president in 1963 and 1964, and as chairsan 6f the Sales promotion Committee for two years prior to that, will not be active in A.T.I. due to a realignment of his duties at UniRoyal, Inc, fr.
