CMA 080301 GSC-121-2 The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. 1. Mr. Roland began the meeting with a review of plans for the upcoming January 10 Executive Committee meeting in Florida, noting that hazardous waste and public compensation would be the central focus of this meeting. Chairmen of the Communications Committee, the Environmental Management Committee, and the Government Relations Committee will be reporting on these issues. ; 1 i 2. Mr. Roland discussed the emerging compensation issue and the plans currently underway for chemical industry advocacy in this issue. He reported on the activities of the Strategy } Options Work Group, under the leadership of Jackson Browning, and the Data Development Group, under the leadership of Bruce Karrh. He reported that we are not aligning ourselves with the asbestos coalition. The industry is communicating with other interested groups and does not view this as solely a chemical industry issue. We will continue to support the Fasten bill. CMA will continue to assess cur priorities in the compensation issue. 3. Mr. Hampton reviewed the Government Relations Committee input into the in-depth briefing on Hazardous Waste Management planned for the CMA Executive Committee meeting, January 10. He summarized his presentation and the GRC plan to achieve objectives on hazardous waste issues. This plan involves faceto-face contact with Members of Congress as well as constituent contact programs, 1 Mr. Estes stressed the importance of working with the Administrates on this issue, and Mr. Stover discussed various ways to work ' with the Administration and their upcoming agenda. Mr. Sercu reported on the presentation the Environmental Management Committee will give at the Executive Committee meeting, and discussed the most recent activities in the hazardous waste management area. cwik 080302 GRC-121-3 4. Mr. Stover discussed options for the advocacy program of cma and distributed an outline of advocacy objectives. He made special note of the media problems industry is currently facing and noted that this will probably be one of our most difficult areas. Mr.stover requested feedback on the advocacy objectives summary. We will need the commitment of CEOs in order to go a'head with our advocacy program. . Mr, Lowrey and Mr, Estes stressed the importance of getting the states involved in our advocacy program, and Mr. Stover reviewed the states activities to date. Mr. Stover reviewed the status of the activities of the legislative communications task group and the importance of having a CMA 'network' for constituent communications activities. The task group is currently working on developing a system to put in place. The Clean Water Task Group continute their efforts in communicating in the states. 5. The Committee discussed coalitioning and CMA's current activities. Mr. Stover reported on the activities of PMA and NACA, and noted that CMA will be pursuing involvement in coalitioning. The U.S. Chamber, NAM, CAWG, and EEI are just a few of the existing relation ships. 6. The Committee reviewed the current assignments of the task group chairmen and keymen. 7.
