Mr. Clifford T. Williams, The Anerican Crucible Products Company* Lorain,, Ohio.
Lear Mr. Villiams :
I am sending you herewith two copies of an analytical report on the lead content of the "brain tissue sent in to us by Dr. IonaIdson. As you will note, the results are very much higher than those obtained in the laboratory in Cleveland, and these results are quite compatible with a diagnosis of fatal lead,
poisoning.
In order that there my be no misunderstanding* j l should point out that the analytical result is not sufficient ground in itself for arriving at the diagnosis. Such, a diagnosis could only bo made on the basis of the clinical evidence of the nature of the man5s illness. On this account, if 1 were to be asked my opinion, I should have to say that it would be necessary for me to have complete information concerning the nature and course of this nan * 3 illness. This, X "believe, would require careful examination of the hospital record, plu3 any additional information that night be obtained from the physicians who are in charge. The analytical result, however, does establish that this man has had a severe exposure to lead, and that the severity was such that lead encephalopathy could have resulted *
I am assuming, of course, that the brain tissue was handled in such a way as to avoid its contamina felon, with extraneous lead compounds. If the tissue had been fixed in contaminated forma lin, or if it had been put in a container that could have con taminated seriously, then theseresults are irrelevant. However, 1 was careful to cut off all superficial tissue from the samples that were analyzed, and as you will note two samples were
examined and the results were cross checked by means of two totally different methods of analysis. I think, therefore, w can accept them as n satisfactory portrayal of the facts. This changes the picture somewhat, but in my opinion it is always wise to knov the truth in these matters
I send you an additional copy of both the report and this letter so that you can forward them to your attorney.
