Durland Qentlemen: Aa a worldwide marketer of conBumer cleaning, personal care and food products, it is vital that our products or packages do not threaten the environment. There is strong evidenoe, supported in part by the attached literature, that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) may be a serious problem in preserving the environment because of their residual, non-dastructible qualities. We are bothered by the fact that PCB's may find their way into our packing materials. It would bs quits difficult to trace back through our suppliers and their sup pliers to determine how these PCB's got into our packages. We do not, however, wish to be a contributor to global pollution. Therefore, we are contacting all known "free world" manufacturers of PCB's in an effort to gain knowledge on this problem and to enoouraga them to follow the lead of Monsanto in the U.S. and U.K. in substantially curtailing the sale of PCB's. As you may know, Monsanto is the sole producer of PCB's in the U.S. and U.K., and they are now selling PCB's only in closely controlled circumstances to users with "closed systems" which pre sumably do not permit PCB's to get into the environment. Ws understand that you produce and market PCB's under the product name of Aroclor. In view of the ecological negatives associated with these materials, we would be most appreciative if you would provide us with any information, which you are willing to reveal, on your present and futura marketing intentions, both domestic and export, for PCB's.
