1.0 Introductory Comments by the Chairman of the Vinyl Chloride (VC) Technical Panel. Dr. T. R. Torkelson
Dr. Torkelson emphasized the importance and timeliness of a research review, the need of Panel members and members of the Research Coordinators as well as members of the VC Medical Subcom mittee to have an opportunity to establish raport with researchers at the School of Medicine, University of Louisville; and, the further need of VC Panel members to secure an insight into the 1979-1980 proposed research program. Dr. Torkelson then turned the meeting over to Carlo H. Tamburro, M.D., Principal Investigator, School of Medicine, University of Louisville.

Overview of University of Louisville Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Study of Chemical Carcinogenesis, Especially Chemical Monomers - Dr. Carlo H. Tamburro, Principal Investipator
The Medical School, University of Louisville has developed a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of chemical carcinogenesis, especially chemical monomers. Vinyl Chloride was one of the first monomers under study. This study involved the combination of a cancer control program incorporating a prospective medical surveil lance system for identifying occupationally related chemical cancer with a clinical research group which worked closely with a medical surveillance program developing better techniques for detection and prevention. Basic research on the molecular structure and pathogenesis of carcinogens, especially chemical monomers, created the third link in the multi-disciplinary approach to the overall study of chemical carcinogenesis.
The remainder of the research review was concerned with summations of studies which comprised components of the three major research parameters of the overall program. These parame ters are:
