CALIDRIA ASBESTOS
DeSoto evaluated Calidria asbestos pellets in their interior flat wall paint to see if this would increase the tensile strength of the paint film. Because of the water demand of the asbestos, onl 10# of pellets per 100 gallons of latex could be incorporated int their paint (a 487. PVC interior flat). At this level of asbestos there was no improvement in film tensile strength.
DeSoto also evaluated asbestos T-135-P to see if use of this grad of asbestos improved the binding of their paint. They found no improvement in binding and concluded that T-135-P could not be used.
DeSoto is also evaluating Calidria asbestos in an undisclosed application utilizing the surface activity of our asbestos. This work is at least 3 to 5 years from completion.
COALESCING AIDS
DeSoto continues to have problems of freeze-thaw stability with t use of Dalpad A and they plan to reevaluate all coalescing aids in August after they complete their evaluation of non-mercurial preservatives. DeSoto will use the ''empirical" approach to the coalescing aid study. Their problem is that the levels of coalej cing aid needed for good film coalescence hurts freeze-thaw sta bility of the paint.
